I basically switch because of two main reason. One I carry my laptop pretty much every where I go. So if I had to guess Im thinking maybe 3-4 days out of a week. That AW that I had was hurting my back but I needed the power that it brought to the table. I do majority of my work in After Effects / Premiere Pro / Photoshop CS4. Another thing was alot of people was noticing there AW have issues. Some had chipping of the finish, spacebar, and palm rest. Ive only noticed the palm rest on my AW but thats it. I had about 14 days or so left in my exchange policy from COSTCO. So I decided to go with the FW. My question is how is the video card and overall performance of the laptop compare to the AW. I dont know too much about video cards however I do know that I know have a 1 gig card vs the 512 MB in the AW.

The FW's HD4650 is considerably better than the Geforce in performance; and the 4650 probably would be able to scale even higher in the future with more compute intensive games, given that it's close to .5 teraflops card. The FW right now, given the graphics, size, and other updated specs, is by far the better choice of the two.

    Thanks, I appreciate it.

OCing a laptop typically would be limited by the thermal characteristics of the design. I don't actually own the laptop (yet), but I'm looking into buying this model. You might have a better idea by asking the people who have it how efficient is the thermal dissipation of this laptop compared to most. It will also depend on the BIOS support in terms of how many parameters can be tweaked, which can also be answered by someone who has already purchased the FW490.

    This.

Also, note that overclocking the GPU will increase power consumption, which will in turn affect the battery life, but I don't really know if the decrease will be significant.

Performance-wise, the HD4650 gets around 6300 points in 3DMark 06, compared to 9600M GT's 5100 points. These numbers aren't so good a measure of performance, but they do give you a general idea.

It's safe to say that you can forget about the memory, as it doesn't really make a difference. 512MB of video memory is more than enough for most if not all programs and games.

The HDD in the FW is faster (7200rpm compared to AW's 5400rpm), which might make a rather small difference in loading times etc.

Overall, it looks like the FW is a bit faster than your older AW :)

Oh, by the way, I don't want to redirect people to other threads, but it would be awesome if you could fill out the FW poll in the thread "Calling all VAIO FW owners!" I'm trying to get as many customer reviews as possible :)

Well I decided to go with the FW because I do video editing in After Effects CS4 and I also use Photoshop CS4. So Im just planning ahead for my apps..
