    I am considering purchasing a Vaio FZ model, but I do have some doubts (particularly concerning its 'portability'), regarding which I can't find clear answers. I would really appreciate it if owners could share their experience with their FZ model regarding these aspects;

    • Aren't Vaio FZ models getting too hot? I do want a notebook I can keep on my lap, even (when using a socket) for extensive periods of time.
    • What about the noise the FZ models produce? Are they silent? I don't want a laptop that drives me crazy with its noise... Is there any truth in this youtube-video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11SD8OxU73s?
    • What is the maximum battery life (assuming you're using the optimal energy settings)? I keep reading quite different things; some websites say 1,5 hours other websites say upto 4 hours...

    Thanks a lot in advance for your insights!

    It gets little hot but its not like unbearble,
    You can hear the noise, especially in a quiet room, I think its from the fan.
    Battery life depends on what graphics card you have and type of work you are doing. I've nvidia 8400GS with normal use I get about 2-2.5 hrs. I think thats typical for a 15 inch laptop.

    I received my VAIO FZ just this past month, so I can say something about the new ones.

    -My FZ is in my lap (on battery) as I'm typing this. With the T8100 processor, it rarely gets above 40C, and the surfaces are much cooler to the touch than the HP dv6000t I had before. Admittedly, the FZ runs much cooler on battery -- I probably wouldn't have it on my lap plugged in, as the exhaust from the fan on the left side gets quite hot.

    -The fan noise is very low on battery, and not all that loud when plugged in. I'd say it's on a par with other Dell or HP laptops I've had -- maybe even a little quieter -- and my fan speed stays fairly constant. Even when gaming, I would say that the fan noise is tolerable.

    -My battery life is a pretty constant 2 hours of wireless web browsing and normal office tasks; maybe 2.5 hours at the most. This is much better than the 45 minutes I got from my HP, however.

    Please realize that, regardless of brand, if you want a cool-running laptop with low fan noise and long battery life, you should limit yourself to models with integrated graphics -- discrete graphics cards are the source of most of the heat and fan noise. You can't have it both ways.

    I would have to agree with cogitatus...

    fz470...

    always on my lap or arm, never a heat issue even plugged in

    pretty much silent other than a small click (from, I think, the optical drive at startup)

    I don't game but with a 6cell battery about 2:10 to 2:30 on a full charge
