hey. i just purchased the sony fz 140. like it alot. ive basically had it on since ive gotten it, which was about a week ago. Im noticing that it does seem to heat up on certain occassions, even when im not using it. I dont usually put it in hibernation or sleep mode, just flip the screen down. Is this a bad thing that i always leave it on, and should the system be heating up? The keyboard and the mouse pad area seem to heat up quite a bit as well as to the bottom where its almost too hot to touch. Let me know.

My notebook gets warm, 41-47 degC, when it is plugged in and in performance mode. When it is running on batteries, it stays cool ~ 27-31 degC. Note ambient temperature is 24-26 degC.

Remember that in "Performance Mode", the Intel Enhanced SpeedStep feature is off, meaning the CPU will run hotter. On batteries (and without the performance profile), the throttling of the CPU will bring down temps somewhat.

What are you using to read the temperatures? And which sensor are you looking at, the temp0 and temp1 or the core sensors? Is this fairly idle or with stuff going on?

I am using core 0 and 1 temps. I usually measure the temps while doing different activities: surfing and working, and gaming. I noticed that on battery power, using power saver mode, the notebook is much cooler. Using cpuz, the processor speed and voltage is:
    high performance - 2.4ghz and 1.175V
    power saver - 1.6ghz and 0.850V

Is there a way to see/modify the speedstep feature? Also, does anyone know if there is a way to conserve more power used by the 8400M GT?

In the advanced settings for a power profile, theres a setting called minimum CPU something, its a percentage. If you set the minimum to anything below 50% on power and on battery, it will enable speedstep.

I'll post a screenshot when I get to laptop later today.

thats very weird gosensego, i can only get my processor down to .900V in power saver. I would love to get it lower but I cant figure it out.

btw mine sits around 27-32 * celcius normal in a house that is about 80 degrees.

my video card is hot though which hangs around 50*C.

the fan near my hard drive is almost always on btw.

Is it okay to leave the notebook on for an extended period of time? I haven't done so yet, but I'm thinking about leaving it on overnight so I can boost my bittorent ratio by uploading all night. Is is going to get too hot or will it be fine? Since I've had it, I turn off the notebook at night when I go to sleep because I don't like how warm/hot it tends to get.

Leave the lid open. You don't want the LCD to trap any heat rising up from the chassis.

So this is what I'm talking about. If you set it like below for the minimum, it will enable SpeedStep even when plugged in. When its set to 100% minimum for plugged in, Speedstep will never kick in.

On power saver battery mode, I set the minimum cpu performance to 5% and the maximum to 50%.

I did settings without even knowing it was speed step technology :). Thanks for the reply JesterX.

    How about the gpu?

I just looked at CPUZ on mine and it says 0.900v when it speedsteps to ~800mhz.

As GoSensGo said, make sure its set to 5% for the minimum, see screenshot above his post.

nVidia uses that, but I don't actually know if its implemented in their current drivers (for Vista) since I don't see an option for it in the nVidia Control Panel.

Their site says it supports ASLM, which can be enabled in the advanced power profile settings.

Hopefully they will implement that option in the vista drivers. I was hoping to save some battery life with the powermizer... Its too bad that the FZ doesn't have hybrid graphics like the SZ as you don't need the 8400M GT to do office stuff.

I dont have 3DMark, but can you do this with your computer plugged in on power.
    1. Set the Link State Power Management to Max Power Savings for your current profile.
    2. Run 3DMark
    3. Compare with it set to off.

If theres a large enough difference, then it means the ASLM is actually doing something.

Why set the max like that??? You will NEVER get the horsepower you might need in that mode. You effectively turn a 2 gig processor into a 1 gig processor.

He may have to wait long for a browser to pop up, but at least he's saving battery life.

    Hi ,
My power scheme set "Minimum Process State" as "5%" but still I have heat issues when I am working around 2-3 hours. The keyboard (Most of time left hand side) is getting very hot.

    Regards
    Raj

Download SpeedFan and find out exactly how hot it is. Make sure you run SpeedFan as an admin. (right click on icon, Run as Administrator)

It runs ok for office stuff and surfing (1.6ghz). I use other power profiles to do other stuff while on battery and in that case I set the max to 100%.
