Alright guys, I did some extensive research using the search function, but just cant get any definitive answers.

    Sony VGN-FZ190
I found the FZ Xp drivers on this thread through sony ftp site
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=161114&highlight=vgn-fz190+downgrade
direct link to Sony FTP, FZ XP drivers: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/FZ19/

-I created a new partition within Vista
-Installed Win XP using nLite to slipstream the SATA drivers
    -Installed the chipset drivers fine
-Installed Video drivers using laptopvideo2go.com drivers
-My main snag comes when installing the Audio drivers

When I attempt to install, the installer prompts "Device Object Not Present" and closes
-I googled around and found that people needed to install kb835221 file from microsoft and also a kb8881 (can't remember the exact file name) file as well
-Still no luck, the device object error message still comes up

As I understand, the error message comes up because it doesn't detect the hardware at all. When I open the device manager, the only yellow exclaimation , unrecognized things are a PCI component.

Im stuck, and Im not sure what I can do at this point to get the audio working.
Do you guys think I should create a new nLite iso, that has these audio drivers slipstreamed? Thats the only other option I think I have.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Any luck?

I am having similar problems with a FZ18L which has no XP drivers available at all. I have used the FZ19 xp drivers to get most of it working... but have got stuck with the graphics and audio...

The nvidia 8400m gt graphics card seems to be vista only but I have found a new driver to try.

Audio wise I had the same problems you describe. I am going to try the older FE39 xp drivers for this and see how I go

You can also try the FZ2 drivers and utilities here. I'm not sure if they're the same as the ones on VAIO-Link, but according to the notes a lot of functions don't currently work:

a combination of FE39 XP drivers, and FZ19/2 drivers seems to work. If you run the utils software for the FE39 you can get the vaio power managment and some fn keys running as well

You might want to post the specifics of which drivers from which sources. A lot of other folks are struggling with this and might benefit from the info!

First I install chipset drivers, then MS patch from archive in sound driver folder. After that you should go to Device Manager and expand chipset group (press +). You should see ? near PCI. Then update driver (again from chipset driver folder). I don't know why but it works for me

    Hi there,

Even though I came across several sets of XP drivers for FZ models, I still haven't found drivers for FZ340E and it seems they're not available.

Which package (FZ19, 39, ...) would work better with FZ340E?

    Cheers,

    Leandro

Hi folks.. I need help to downgrade my FZ340E from Vista to XP.. I've seen many steps are required, including driver downloads.. Have someone successfully done such downgrade? If so, could you please post here the steps for getting it done?

    Thanks a lot!

But there is a way to fix this problem:

    Check out these two links:

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum...79&hl=sony+vaio+fz2+nvidia+driver++pieter+inf

    and

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=195238

Basicly you take the driver and you need to modify one of the INF files before installing.... or just take a standard driver which has been modded to allow installation for most Nvidia devices and subsitute into it the SPECIAL modded INF file such that the brightness controls work. I used the 169.28 drivers and the Modded 169.28 INF that included the brightness fix.

Make sure after install the driver you go onto to the desktop, right click, then bring up the Properties, then Settings tab, click Advanced button, then GeForce 8400M GT tab, the Additional Properties button and go down to the SmartDimmer item... set the items such that they aren't all fully on... I have Plugged in at Max but On Battery about 3/4 on and I have the SmartDimmer when idle checked and at about 3/4..... Click Apply and OK ... Click OK at Display properties.... and you should be done. The function keys for brightness now should work.

Note also that the order of install of some of the Sony applications is also important to get the buttons to work.

I used the drivers from the Sony Asia Pacific site... they have drivers for XP and instructions on how to do it.

BUT MY PROBLEM is AUDIO. I installed the audio driver and it work fine in XP however I can't get audio out via HDMI... the driver doesn't seem to support it.... if you have any ideas let me know!

Brightness control works fine via Fn +F5/F6 after the new driver install and the tweak as described above for the smart dimmer.

The volume controls on the silver 4 way button at the top right work fine for me. The Fn + F2 works fine to mute for me as well....

Fn+F10 does not work for Zoom. However if you enable the NView Desktop manager, there is a Zoom tab and in the hot key tab you can assign a hot key to it but not Fn + F10 for some reason....

I had originally installed the video driver from Sony Asia-Pacific. Before I installed the updated driver with the special INF I did use a Driver Sweeper tool before installing the new driver to make sure I was doing a clean install.

Here is a link to the Driver Sweeper tool I used:
    http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=driversweeper

I know that order of install of the Sony specific software is VERY important... one program is dependant on another... I followed the order suggested at the Sony Asia-Pacific web site XP downgrade info.

Note that you should be able to go into the VAIO Control Center Program and can assign what the S1 button does. This is also confirmed working.

One other tip, using the Wireless driver from Sony A-P, I did not get WPA2 encryption as a choice for wireless LAN. I determined that a Microsoft Windows hotfix is required... KB917021. After installing this, I got WPA2 encryption choices to show up.

    Here is a link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...2F-D52B-4F84-ACE8-F7FC20195769&displaylang=en

What specific NVidia driver did you install?

Did you install XP SP3 yet?... there seems to be issues with the audio driver I have seen.... I am doing a wait and see on SP3 for now....

Anybody have any experience concerning audio via HDMI??

Yes they really all work. The volume controls worked before I installed the updated video driver ..... They started working in the step when the VAIO Control Center was installed. Note that the order of install of expecially the Sony software is critical.

My computer is a VGN-FZ180E/B USA model but these are very similar to like an FZ18G or FZ18L. I do have NVidia graphics... not Intel so that will make a difference.

I haven't tried the << and >> buttons so I don't know if they work.... I don't think they work even in Vista but I will do some checking over the weekend. As I recall, with NVidia graphics I didn't think you could get these buttons working in Vista... only if you had Intel Graphics.

Check over the install directions at the Sony Asia Pacific site for the XP downgrade for the VGN-FZ18G for example. If you look at the download zip directions, they give a complete sequence of install instructions... my only other suggestion to these instructions is reboot after each driver install. I had some blank screens after rebooting on some installs... don't worry just power down and power back up after the HD activity has stopped. If you look at the instructions for doing a Vista clean install for an FZ190, their is a chart which shows some of the dependencies in Vista... they are probably similar in XP.

I think the brightness control came up but wouldn't change anything before I installed the modded driver and special modded inf and also did the smart dimmer tweak I described.

S1 is programmable thru the Vaio Control Center.

Note that you need to install KB917021 for WPA2 wireless network support as well.

Its not to say everything is perfect... at this point: no audio out via HDMI, the camera capture utility causes a bubble to pop up in the tray to tell me to restart the camera capture utility... even thou it seems to work, and the volume output on the microphone input from the built in microphone seems weak. But its a good start.

From what I have been reading, I know is the Vista SP1 upgrade, there are issues with the IDT/Sigmatel audio driver installing and causing problems... I "THINK" I also read somewhere this was also an issue with Win SP3? I too have all the update for MS installed AFTER I got all the Sony Stuff done... I did go thru Windows update several times as some of the updates for example like .Net framework I tried to install in order... doing the earliest updates first then seeing what was suggested next and then doing the next upgrade in line. I think their were about 95 or so updates. I DID NOT install SP3 as I am waiting to see what issues come out with this update... no real reason to jump on this one right away.

From one EE to another..... good luck.

The reports were that it would install, but that changing from battery to AC power or back did nothing to the power settings. It was non-functional. No settings would change.

    Power Management: Kind of works.
I put it into VAIO ultimate battery.
The monitor should go off after 2 minutes... did not see this... unless this doesn't mean the normal LCD screen ???:
Hard drive should turn off after 3 minutes.... couldn't tell??
Goes into Standby after 5 minutes.... this worked

Also got a message that asked if I wanted to shut down CD drive. Also got bubbles that it couldn't shutdown the WiFi or Audio/Modem since they were in use?? Also got message box that said that the computer was in Quiet mode and the fan was turned off and the temperature of the computer might go higher.... the fan was shut off.

So I think it is trying to work??

    Questions to Electronic_Eng:

Can you give a link to the AV Mode Button Utility.exe??

Can you explain what Fn + F12 is?? (EDIT: this is go to Standby Mode)

Can you tell me what audio driver is installed? Is it different after the SP3 change? You may need to look both in the Add/Remove Program to see what is noted for the Sigmatel driver (it may now be IDT/Sigmatel??) and also check in the Device manager to see what is noted for the Sigmatel CODEC...

Also can you check if KB888111 is installed or is KB835221 is installed. This is the UAA (universal audio architecture) driver which is the base level of what needs to be installed for audio. If the driver from Sony A-P is installed, it is probably KB835221... KB888111 is newer

If you have a chance can you see if you can output audio via HDMI... Look under the Sound & Audio in the Control panel, then check to see under Audio if you can select a different playback device other than Sigmatel Audio???... HDMI audio output is still a problem for me. Without this, you can't play BD DVD to an HDMI input big screen.

Also try using the camera capture utility and try to record some video from the camera (movies).. do you get any warning bubbles show up?? Is the volume of the recording OK? So far I have been messing with audio drivers and have this problem at this time.

Good job and glad it is working

For the Intel Graphics on FZ owner:

There is another site from Sony which has a complete set of driver including the Intel Graphic Drivers... I don't know much else about the drivers here. I was originally going to use these but when I found the stuff at Sony A-P, the files their seemed well described and instructions fairly clear. You may want to use these drivers. Note that these drivers are numbered and probably should be installed in this number order....

    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/FZ19/

Again I think most of these drivers are the same but I am not positive.... also, I don't have any ideas if the screen brightness (fn F5/F6) will work since you have a completely different graphics adapter than the Nvidia ones we are using. My guess if it doesn't work with the drivers... you may be out of luck for now.....

I have a Sony VAIO Fz180E. I installed the nVIDIA ForceWare X 174.74 with moded driver. But I could not get the Fn brightness keys working ! So I decided to do a clean install again.
I have one question: From Asia Windows XP Downgrade drivers should I use 2008 Spring Series VGN-FZ3 Series or FZ1 Series driver?

I would stick with the FZ1 series drivers.... there are some major differences between the different models. Note don't install anything (like bluetooth) if you don't have it.

    Concerning the screen:

Did you replace the nv4_disp.inf file in the driver file (174.74.exe) you downloaded and ran to expand the driver with the nv4_disp.inf file from here??:

    http://files.filefront.com/nv4+dispinf/;9947686;/fileinfo.html

(this was the link that was for the special modded INF in message 1 of this link):

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=195238

Then you install the driver (using setup.exe inside the driver files) ... then you do the smart dimmer tweak described above and then you should have brightness control

BUT.... again the order of the Sony driver install is important for the Sony stuff due to dependencies of the software in order to make this work.

    Electronic_Eng:

    Thanks for your answers....

    AUDIO:
Can you check to see if you can select anything different to choose in the Control Panel... Sound and Audio Devices...Audio tab... Sound Playback ... Default Device ... other than SigmaTel Audio (my only choice)....

I think this is where you would set to send out HDMI Audio output??? I don't think you need to be plugged into a HDMI device in order to do this.

If you then go to the Hardware tab and Select the SigmaTel (or IDT??) CODEC then go to the Driver tab... What version do you have here?(Mine currently since using the Audio.RAR file I tried has SigmaTel 5/26/2006 5.10.5067.0)

Then if you go under driver details... scroll down the list to sthda.sys, stacpi.dll and staco.dll ... What versions do you have here? (Mine currently since using the Audio.RAR file I tried has ver 1.0.5067.0 nd477 cp1, 1.0.5067.0 nd477 cp1 and 1.0.5067.0 nd477 cp1 built b WinDDK respectively)

I think only one of the KB hotfixes is supposed to be present. In the AR model instructions, they noted to uninstall the earlier one before installing KB888111.

I guess we may see what is really working by going under Device Manager... expand System Devices... then scroll down to Microsoft UAA Buss Driver for High Definition Audio.... Driver Tab... Mine is showing Microsoft 3/5/2004 version 5.10.0.5010.... I don't know what KB this should apply to but the date seems mighty old??? What do you have here?

    POWER MANAGEMENT:
Tried this again (VAIO Maximum Battery) after computer had been powered up for some time. I only got the Quiet Mode message box this time... no other bubbles. The fan did seem to be on for some of the time but very quiet (maybe it was the HD noise... hard to tell) Screen dimmed. I do think the HD stopped but then restarted a short time latter (but long before the 5 minutes total time to standby were up)?? The WLAN indicator remained on. And the computer did turn off again after 5 minutes.... We do have some control...

I did check under VAIO power management. What is supposed to happen...Brightness to level 1 (dark), Fan to quiet mode, and per my settings the WLAN, CD drive should remain on... which I think is what they are doing.

I don't know enough about power management to really know what is supposed to happen. The screen dimming and the timeout to standby seem to be working... I guess thats the major things.

I did note when I installed Power Management that the version noted at first was 2.1.00.1630 which I think is the installer version info... and latter as it installed it showed 1.9.04.15260. When I went into the Power Options and went to the VAIO Power Management tab and click advanced it showed Ver 1.9.04

I then looked at the other Power Management applications for other FZ series and checked them to see if a different version number showed up. For review:

Series FZ1 showed ver 2.1.00.1630 then latter during install 1.9.04.1630

Series FZ2 showed ver 1.9.04.15260 on beginning of install... this may be the same driver as FZ1 series except without additional install layer

Series FZ3 showed ver 11.50.0.42618 at beginning of install

I think they layered the FZ1 series with another installer layer but the basic driver between FZ1 and FZ2's are the same. FZ3 power management seems totally different by the outside version number.... I did not install the FZ2 or FZ3 complety... I just started them.

    CAMERA:
Maybe my current audio driver is causing this error... I will continue to investigate this.

Note that the FZ2 and FZ3 series seem to use a completely different driver due to a different camera installed:

FZ1 series: VGP-VCC4 which on install shows 6.1008.207.0 which shows under Device Manager as a Ricoh USB Video Device 6.1008.207.0
FZ2 series: VGP-VCC5 which is different then the FZ1 series (I didn't even try opening it)
FZ3 series: VGP-VCC5 which is different then the FZ1 series (I didn't even try opening it)

The camera capture application program may be similar... I did not check this out.

Did you record some video and check to see if audio level from built in microphone was OK??

Thanks to everyone for contributing to this thread!!

    To Electronic_Eng:

Thanks for posting the AV Mode Utitlity. I did find it on the Sony USA site as the file SOAOTH-13986300-US.exe as found under the VGN-TZ190N model.... other TZ models show another version 1.1.01.04140 from 1 day earlier 10/4/07... not sure what the difference is....

Anyway... all the TZ models I think are Intel Graphics cards not NVidia.... From what my understanding was that the AV Mode key was only for Intel Graphics cards. This would allow you to power up into an Instant On mode where you could play music, DVD's, etc.....

My AV key as it stands without the driver turns the computer on from standby or power off but doesn't do any kind of Instant On mode....

What does the AV Mode driver allow you to do??

    Thanks again.

Thanks for getting back so fast... I just had lunch and there were several replies!

I am from the Central USA near Milwaukee, WI and we are on CDST which is about a 9 hour time difference.

I am not as good as you are in using the quote feature as you are so please bear with me....... never really had a need to use it

    AUDIO:

It appears you have version 5.10.5155.0 ...

Do you have a link to this file handy??

I did do some looking at Sony A-P but didn't see it... Its kind of tuff to search for this via Sony USA site...

It seems like I have seen this driver for XP for Dell... for example:

EDIT: THESE DRIVERS DO NOT WORK. THESE ARE FOR STAC92XX DEVICES NOT STAC98XX WHICH IS WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE IN OUR SONY FZ.... even thou they are the same version??

R171789.exe v.5.10.0.5515_RC22-WHQL, A11 for Dell XPS M1330 and several other models....
    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R171789&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=235761

    R176360.exe v.5.10.0.5515_RC23-WHQL, A12 for Dell XPS M1730
    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R176360&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=239911

    and

    R181712.exe v.5.10.0.5515_RC23-WHQL, A13 for Dell XPS M1730 (newer version??
    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R181712&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=247743

I don't know if any of these will work... they may work via updating the driver from the device manager.... however but I am not sure. The best fit for us would probably be the one for the M1330 I believe...

We need to be somewhat careful with other drivers and that they may certain pinouts defined differently than what we have on the FZ...

I am not certain if you need an HDMI device plugged in such that the HDMI audio output device will show. I am going to look at some Dell info for the M1330 to see how to use it.

Couldn't find anything about Sony Direct Output??? What is it?
    Do you have a link??

We both seem to have the same Windows UAA driver... I am not sure how the hotfixes KB835221 and KB888111 are shown in the device manager.

    From this article for reference:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111

And then if you look under Device Manager, Sytem Devices, Microsoft UAA Bus Driver, Driver tab and Driver Details it shows hdaudbus.sys has version 5.10.01.5013 which is what the article above describes for KB888111. Thus I think I am confirmed as having KB888111 applied. If the suffix was 5011 we would have KB835221 applied.

    POWER MANAGEMENT:

We appear to be the same... for the most part it seems to be working... I don't think we have any other choices to try here as this is specific Sony SW. I don't think using the FZ3 series software would be a good choice... I think too many things changed in hardware to risk trying it....

    CAMERA:

Driver: Per the install I am 6.1008.207.0 Not sure what you have but I don't think we are different...

VAIO Camera Utility ver: You have 2.0.01.02070
Per what it showed when it installed and what is in the Add/Remove programs... we are the same.

VAIO Camera Capture Utility ver: You have 2.3.00.15160
When it installed it showed 2.2.00.14140
In the About in the program (right click title bar): I have 2.3.00.15130 ... However when I check it in the Add/Remove programs I have 2.3.00.
I don't know if we are different???

By the way... where are you finding this information??? I tried looking via RegEdit and looked in the install files but didn't seem to find this format for this info you show below:

    Example:
    [InstallationInfo]
    ProductName=VAIO Camera Capture Utility
    Version=2.3.00.15160

Maybe the low audio input is related to my audio driver... I didn't seem to have this balloon issue popping up before either.

    AV MODE UTILTIY:
Again, I checked some links and this utitity is if you have Intel Graphics. There is a file called Sony Instant Mode Software, Version 1.0.0 . This software has all the applications so you can play music, DVD's etc...all I think without even booting into Windows...

Here is a link to describe its operation:
    http://129.33.22.12/release/VGNTX700_InstantMode.pdf

But again this only works if you have Intel Graphics not NVidia... I know via my Vista partition (I am dual boot) I can't run it.

I guess this is way to start up programs from a tray icon...

I wonder what it does when you press it when the computer is off??? I think it supposed to start up whatever application you point it at... however most applications won't work without Windows running???

Again, this is supposed to be quick way to play music, or DVD's without the delay starting up Windows....

You can get the software to go with it from here (TZ model):
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNTZ150N&upd_id=3062&os_id=7

    but also see this:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=185585

I don't think this is going to work....

I will try another audio driver this afternoon..

    Have a good evening.

ill give a try for the version on M1330 to se if it work.

u have to try first if it works with the ather way i mean maybe if u try without changing the device on the audio output.

let me have a search on this one maybe i find something

look at file inside folder for version.txt:
    C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Camera Capture Utility

every folder have a version.txt for info :D

for the AV button when windows are shut dows it does nothing :p ill try the Sony® Instant Mode Software

Like what??? I am not saying you are wrong, but thus far the only differences that I have seen are Processors and Disk Drives. And of course the OBVIOUS differences in Video cards and Wireless network cards. But as far as using one series of FZ drivers on another, if you know how to get past Sony's model checks (there are ways) I would think that you ought to be able interchange most of the drivers. I don't think there are any fundamental differences in the FZ models.

Again, this is speculation on my part if you have some info to the contrary, please do share it.

It is for FZ models with Intel Graphics and non-blueray DVD drives. It is designed to allow you to play DVD's (and CD's I think) without booting up the system.

    OK...more feedback

    AUDIO:

I uninstalled via Add/Remove programs. The version number there was the orginal one I had installed from Sony A-P site... 4067?? I had installed the Audio.RAR file which was a newer driver but this wasn't showing in the Add/Remove Programs. SO after uninstalling the old driver, I uninstalled directly in Device Manager the Sigmatel Audio CODEC which was I think ver 5067. I rebooted and installed via your link 5515 (ignore my previous mention of 5155)

Audio works fine thru speakers... but as you said no choice for HDMI output. I confirmed that there is NO audio output via HDMI by connecting it to my LCD screen. No setting changes made any difference... I did have some static noise on my LCD but the only sound came out via the Laptop speakers.

I also went back to Vista to see how the driver performed their. It was necessary to change the sound playback device manually.... but I DID have sound output to the LCD screen and the laptop speakers were off.

So we have no solution for audio to HDMI at this point.

The Dell drivers should be able to be switched from one playback device to another by right clicking on loudspeaker icon and selecting a different playback device.

The only danger with the Dell drivers is fthe pinout configuration may be different between our FZ models and the Dell XPS models

Note per my reading today that the XPS M1330 never could output audio via HDMI but could output it simultaneously via SPDIF..... The XPS M1530 can however do HDMI audio output.... but there is NO specific driver for it for XP...most people recommend using the M1330 drivers.. The XPS M1730 has their own different drivers and I don't know if they would work for the M1530??

The danger is burning something out on the board!!!!

    CAMERA:

Uninstalled and reinstalled the Camera Utility and the Camera Capture programs... no change ... I am still am getting ballon pop up.... I did make some setting changes but not sure if that is what started causing the issue. I may need to start from scratch for this problem.

There is one reference to this problem:
    http://www.micropctalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2346

There also a hotfix for Vista for something similar:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931812

Don't have any thoughts at this point on this... maybe there is newer software

Audio is still weak... I can definetely hear myself but it isn't very loud. No real difference.

    AV BUTTON:

I don't think the instant mode software will work because I don't think that the NVIdia drivers will work WITHOUT Windows where as the Intel Drivers will.... I don't have much faith that this is going to work....

    Thats it for the day...

    There are differences....

Power Management is different between FZ1, FZ2 and a different FZ3.

Sound drivers are different between different sources. The Sony A-P site seems to be older for the FZ1, where as the ftp site is a newer version

The Camera changes between the FZ1 and FZ2,FZ3 series

The AV Mode Utility I think is meant more for the Intel models and not the NVidia models

So sticking with closest drivers are safest for a start but then you can experiment with them after you getting a working system you have backed it up. I am all for experimenting.... but you need a starting place.

The Sony A-P site doesn't seem to have anything concerning the Intel driver models.... the ftp site does... thus my recommendation of starting there.

Now if we can only experiment and find a driver that supports HDMI audio output!!!

    Thanks for your comments.

    AUDIO:
No progress here. The 5515 driver you sent a link for does NOT seem to handle HDMI audio output.

I did run across this link:

    http://www.dellcommunity.com/suppor...ard.id=insp_general&message.id=261962#M261962

Now to start this is concerning Intel Graphics... not NVidia. But it did point out order of install may be important.... So

I uninstalled the Video Driver, cleaned using Drive Cleaner, then reinstalled the video driver....

DID NOT WORK... still no HD Audio choice

I did note that brightness control worked right away.... didn't have to redo tweak to get brightness control working.

I may do a complete HD audio clean... remove everything related to Audio and Video and then install Audio stuff first then video.... don't know if this will work. Although this is not the Sony install order.

    I also noted this also:

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php?t15175.html

See the Change Log... about no sound via HDMI

Maybe we are using the wrong Video driver... we may be using one more optizmized for desktop use and not or laptop use???? Maybe we should be using something similar to what we have in Vista in version number (we still may need to modify it for brightness control manually however)???

Is there a fix for the intel graphics chipsets? Everyone has gotten the fix for the nVidia chipsets and they got the brightness fn keys to work and the power management to work but i have the intel chipset on the vgn-fz240e and have been waiting for someone to figure it out because vista just sucks
