So I got the SATA drivers, but during installation I get a prompt saying that Windows can not detect the type of computer I have, something i haver never seen before, then it gives me a prompt:

    1. 486i ???
    2. Other

If I select 1, it continues, but after asking for the SATA drivers and after loading a few files when it is ready to load windows to get to the prompt which you partition and format it just freezes.

I am using XP SP2, I have used this CD on at least 10+ PCs.

    Any ideas?

These systems come with AHCI enable in the BIOS by default.

Problem: When attempting to install Microsoft Windows XP or a previous version on an AHCI-enabled system will cause the setup to fail with the error message "set up could not detect hard disk drive.

FIX: Disable AHCI in the BIOS (The Advanced Menu)

Good luck with that "fix". The Sony FZ190 BIOS does not expose any of this sort of functionality. So that is not the issue here, as other folks have successfully installed XP on an FZ190 series machine, albeit without function key or power management support. Beside that, Tim has NOT not reported seeing the error message you quoted.

Tim, specifically what CD are you trying to use for the install. Is it a Retail copy an MSDN copy or what? Also are you sure you have the CORRECT sata drivers? What device do you have these drivers on? XP at install time is not able to load drivers from a wide array devices like Vista is. For example you can't use a USB memory stick DURING an XP install, whereas Vista will allow you to do so.

I got the drivers from here:

    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/FZ19/DRIVERS

I am installing from a floppy USB, press F6 and then I select Intel® 82801HEM/HBM as the driver to install, it installs it fine and passes this stage and then it freezes.

I am using a retail XP SP2 OEM CD.

That last sentence may be the key. Many OEM DVD's are tied to a manufacturer's machine BIOS. I bet that is the issue here.

Tim you might want to take this discussion to one of the existing XP install threads here to see if any of the other folks who have installed it have had a similar issue.

I have used this CD to install XP on various machines including custom builts, 20+ PCs. Its OEM in a sense that it does not come with a fancy box and manuals. I also tried another XP CD, same issue.

I bought the OEM from here by the way:

    Tim,

I am at a loss on this. As I said check with some of the other folks (maybe evenPM one or more) who have installed XP on their FZ. I have not seen any similar reports.
