As the title says, I installed the 101.28 driver from laptopvideo2go this afternoon. It installed perfectly - no errors and no complaining. And it fixed the main problem I was having, which was Windoze Dreamscene getting flaky and pixelating. All was good until I tried to adjust the brightness and found that the utility would pop up and move one notch, but nothing actually happened with the brightness. Fortunately, I had System Restore turned on so it was easy to go back. Has anyone else had this problem? More importantly, have you found a fix?

I haven't had any problems with my brightness or anything else after installing the 101.28 driver. Could it be something else?

I suppose it could be anything. (thank you Sony)
But that was the only change I made to the system this afternoon, it was working before, and system restore also made it work. I even tried a complete system shutdown and reboot when it first happened, but that didn't fix it. Grrr, maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

I just thought of something. Did you use the "modified .inf" file as supplied by the web site? Or did you further modify it?

yeah it did that to me too, but it's only with the FN keys for brightness.

The modified inf provided by laptopvideo2go doesn't have the brightness settings for your FZ. You may be able to get it to work if you install the driver provided by Sony first then install the updated driver with the modified inf, or if you understand how the inf files are structured, combine the brightness part of the sony inf with the laptopvideo2go inf.

just use the brightness setting from windows. its not that big of a hassle. i usually have it on full bright when plugged in, and about 33% when on battery.

And do you know exactly where to access that control in Vista Ultimate? The nVidia control panel has a brightness control but that only adjusts the color settings of the panel itself, and does nothing with the backlight.

Hm, interesting. I first allowed Vista to update itself and then installed the 101.28 driver for the GPU and I have no problems whatsoever. My Fn keys still do what they are supposed to and I can still adjust brightness. Again, it seems this is not a general problem.

A happy ending to this story - I have it working. It seems as though the method of installation make a difference. The first two times I used the setup.exe included with the package from the web site. That method broke the brightness control. But today I tried the brute force method using device manager, telling it to update the driver for the display adapter, telling it I have the disk and pointing to the folder where the new stuff is. The driver installed perfectly, the brightness still works, and Dreamscene seems to be fixed.

    Yep.

But Dreamscene still isn't all that stable. It still crashes several times a day, along with Windoze explorer crashing and restarting.

Other people have said that there's a performance improvement. But I'm not a gamer so a tiny bit of video performance means little to me. I just want the damn thing to be stable. The Dreamscene is such a cool new feature of Vista ultimate, but it crashes every time I close the lid or even lock the computer.

i decided to go back and tinker with the brightness control, i uninstalled all the drivers. i tried to install the one from the sony site, but when i boot it, everything is fine until i get to the welcome screen. everything just goes blank and the screen goes off, but windows still chimes.

when i go into safe mode it works fine.

so i got rid of the drivers from the sonysite, and i tried installing just 162.18 but it doesnt allow me to use the brightness control. also, when i run windows experience it gives me the blue screen of death as well.

now windows aero is shut off, and i cant get it to enable again.

so many problems for such a little ordeal.

What else, besides the driver did you change? Are ANY of the function keys working? I have a feeling this MIGHT be more of a general function key issue, rather than a specific brightness issue.

I had the same problem with a vaio SZ but i solve this using the especific SZ .nfo file and my brightnes worked again.

try to find this specific .nfo file for your notebook model and install it with the driver
