Hi! I bought a new Vaio VPCF122FX laptop. Straight out of the package, I turned it on and immediately heard a faint sound.. almost sounds like a very faint fan running directly beneath the keyboard. It was normal cool temperature, but I still heard this sound.
Here is a pic of beneath the Laptop: http://prohardver.hu/dl/cnt/2010-04/58750/pic/sony_vaio_f_bottom1_b.jpg
It sounds like the sound is coming from the little vent area directly beneath the battery.
I know what the heat fan sounds like, and it isn't that noise. I know what the CPU sounds like when it is 'working' and it isn't that noise.
So a few questions:
-Anyone with a Vaio F (Or any Vaio owner!), when you first turn on your do you hear a faint fan sound? I know the heat fan turns on momentarily, and it isn't that noise.
-How about when your laptop is just idling; with no heat fan or CPU 'working' sound, what do you hear?
-Is there a way to turn off all the fans on the laptop to check if it is a fan, and not a defective laptop?
-Should I exchange the laptop for another one just in case?
Thanks for reading... sorry for asking so many questions, lol.

Sorry to bump this.. but can anyone give me some general advice? Doesn't matter if you own a Vaio or not...
I just want to see if I should exchange this laptop or not.. I don't want it to get past a week. -

Some thoughts:
a) Are you able to set the thermal strategy to 'Silent'? When it's in that state, the fan should be pretty quiet then. At least, you can confirm if that's the fan noise.
b) Can you record the sound and post the file? That would give us a better idea of what the sound actually, er, sounds like -
High pitched noise - CPU, nothing wrong.
Faint noise - might be the fan, nothing wrong. Fan will go ON/OFF depending upon the core temperature. -
And I'll try and record the noise!
Thanks for the reply. -

The Silent Mode option isnt there... sorry I'm still new to this Vaio, lol.
How do I set this up so I can choose that option? -
You want a core i7 laptop to be silent? Funny!

I dunno.. I may just exchange it for the same model, if not a different brand.
coolguy.. your sarcasm isnt helping anything! Although it did make me think- my older laptop was an OLD amd, maybe that's why it was silent at idle lol.
This is my first intel, and my first high end laptop! So things may differ a bit huh.
Anyways... thanks for the replies TofuTurkey! I'd give you rep points or something, but I've no clue how these message boards work.
Edit: NM, I added you some Rep. Lol. -

I was kind of hoping someone with a Vaio F would have replied by now
Here's a Z thread where someone recorded the sound of the fan:

Ignoring the loud 'whooshing', there's a mechanical whine in the background. If you 'exercise' your CPU (e.g. play a graphics intensive game), if it's a fan noise, it should increase.
Faint sound coming from a new Vaio! Need some advice.
