My Vaio VPC-F11NFX/B laptop is less than a year old. A few days ago, whenever it was left unattended for more than a few hours, I would find the screen had gone black, the fan sounds in hyperdrive (high pitch whirring, but not a lot of heat), and though the status light was still green, the machine is completely unresponsive, resulting in a hard shutdown. I have had to do this 5-6 times now. I have tried to change the power options, including setting the screen shutoff to "Never" to no avail. Is this a known issue? Any solutions? (I DID recently upgrade the RAM to 8GB, but fail to see how that would affect it.) Thanks for any advice!

Four months later, my hard drive failed, presumably due to multiple hard resets. I just purchased a new HDD, and re-installed Windows. I am burning through Windows activations! Lo and behold, the problem is STILL there. I had hoped that a simple blind Windows key->(right arrow)->Enter would shut it down. But that's not the case. Surely I am not alone with this problem? Needless to say, this will be my last Sony notebook purchase. Anyone?

Thanks for your response. Besides the fact that my unit has either just passed the one year mark or is close to it, the fact that I swapped the hard drive pretty much voids the warranty, no?

If you don't tell them, they probably won't care... well I've always had on-site services and since they send a contractor, they don't care that you've opened up your laptop.

Here is an alert from the Sony Vaio Support site that may or may not be of concern to you. Without this firmware update your Vaio can overheat and destroy some of your hardware. Sony eSupport - VPCF11NFX/B - News & Alerts

I have exactly the same problem, Ive tried all the usual software stuff, but the fact you replaced the hard drive leads me to believe its a hardware issue. Did you try reverting to your old ram?
