So I upgraded my SR420 to Windows 7 a while back and this fan issue has been bothering me ever since.

I bought a new 7200 rpm HDD and installed a clean version of Win 7 Ultimate. Then I installed the bare essentials from the drivers page and everything works fine. Well the HDD clicks, but that's not the laptop's or window's fault and I fixed it with a utility called QuietHDD).

The only problem is the fan is running constantly, even when all I'm doing is lightly surfing the internet. I've tried switching into Silent Mode but it doesn't look like anything happens other than the onscreen notification.

Off the top of my head I know I installed Power Management, Mode Switch, Settings Utility Series and VAIO Event Service. Did I miss an important driver somewhere?

    Thanks

There is nothing for the fan to run high when surfing the internet. Because all web pages are filled with flash movies these days.

Granted, but that's not the point. The fan is still running in on regardless. Any thoughts?

I can tell you same thing is happening on my SZ460 after Win7 installation. Any experts on this issue who could chime in would be of great help to us

    Thank you!

p.s. did you get the speed/stamina switch mode fixed?

This thread is about the SR. The SR also does not have a speed stamina switch.

pcll4678, what is the model number of your laptop SR420XXX?

If you did an upgrade you should be able to change your thermal profile in the Vaio control center under power management. Try silent mode and see if that works for you.

I had a new discovery to one of the many reasons which might cause your error. I saw an increase average 5 degrees on my processor cores by doing nothing. If you can help me identify your error to the root by trying the simple steps as below

    Device Manager > CD/DVD-ROM > Properties > Driver
Now click the Driver Detail tab and do you see any funny looking files which should not be in there, ie PxHelp20.sys? If not then try

    Device Manager > CD/DVD-ROM > Properties > Details
Now scroll down one by one and what your looking for is anything which shouldn't be there, if your not sure what shouldn't be in there then look for PxHelp20.sys in the low and up filter, anything to do with Px and sonic

If you find it then that is your problem, let me know

    Good luck - cheers

Control Center was one of the things I left uninstalled. I put it on just now, and noticed that the thermal profile was set to 'performance', but as corrado said, switching to 'silent' didn't do anything for me either in Win7 64.

Under Properties -> Driver I have the following
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\anydvd.sys
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\SiRemFil.sys

AnyDVD is for ripping DVDs and while not essential, I'd like to keep it.

Under Properties -> Device, I didn't see anything along the lines of PxHelp20.sys
Under Class upper filters, SiRemFil shows up again, and under Class lower filters AnyDVD is there.

Someone else asked, this is a SR420J/B that I bought directly from a SonyStyle store and the only hardware upgrade I made was popping in a new 7200 rpm HD ( This one if it matters).

Thanks for your suggestions, and renewing my faith in the NBR community. Additional suggestions are welcome and appreciaited.

This is a very busy time of the year for many people.

Did you update your BIOS to the latest version, it most likely unlocks VT but it is good to upgrade anyway because the BIOS was issued with the lauch of W7. The chipset driver and video driver you need obviously. Also, the setting utility series and the vaio control centre. You've already installed the event service. You also may wish to install the Vaio original function setting. You also need the firmware extension parser device driver and the shared library.

Also, check your wifi adapter settings.

What Rachel said applies to just about ALL Sony Vaio computers. Without these things, power mangement and function keys don't work. Also you need to be sure you install these things in the proper order. The Sony support website offers a set of instructions spelling out the correct order.

    Thanks for replying Rachel.

I hadn't updated the BIOS earlier but I did it now. It didn't unlock VT, but I don't think I'll ever need it. However the BIOS installation did show me just how fast my fan can really spin, lol. So I guess I'm not hearing the fan on high all the time, but it is still louder than when I was using the 5400 rpm drive and Vista.

I installed chipset and video during the initial setup. I've also done Settings Utility Series, Vaio Control Center, Event Service, and the Shared Library, but I don't remember in what order. If anyone has the proper order (and if there is a proper uninstallation order) I'd really appreciate it.

I just installed the Firmware Extension Parser (not sure if I did that one originally) and the Original Function Setting but I'm not sure if they really had any effect.

If it helps any, before I tried any of this the Mode/Settings and 5 shortcut buttons were in fact working.

It looks like it just isn't available on my model. I installed the Intel Processor Identification Utility and it says Virtualization (and HyperThreading) are unavailable. I have the T6500 model.

That list appears to be alphabetical. The sequence is very important, at least on some models. But only because some of the things that need to be installed have some interdependencies. I know that Sony recommends on the FZ series that you install in this order:
    A. Sony Shared Library 3.0.00.10180
    B. Sony Utility 7.0.00.11210
    C. Setting Utility Series 2.0.00.11230
    D. Video
    E. Audio
    F. Wireless
    G. Modem
    H. Toshiba Bluetooth

That is a partial list, but the point is that for the Video and Audio on screen controls to work properly their drivers had to be installed AFTER the library and utilities. I have seen similar sequences specified for other models as well, for the same reason. More recent installers MAY be able to get around the sequence, even though I know they still have the same dependencies.

You can follow the guide and i recommend it but i've not always on a few Sony's and it did not make a bit of difference.

If you go here to the bottom of the page and open the pdf you will see the basic install order guide for another model. You might not have all those drivers but just look at the important things.
    http://www.sony.com.sg/support/download/217772/product/vgn-tx57gn/sectionfirst?subpage=detail

Sony in Asia have the order laid out for the SR4 for a clean install in the above format.
It looks the same for some basic things and notes that the order is the correct install order at the top of the page.
    http://www.sony-asia.com/support/download/319059/product/vgn-sr43g/sectionfirst?subpage=detail

The link for the EU models is listed in a manner that appears to be the same format for a downgrade guide listed on the EU website. The order looks very similar and that is why i mentioned it.

You can take the above SR model as a reference because it clearly lists that is the install order.

    Edited to add:
This appears to be the W7 upgrade install order which follows the premise of the guide above. You might want to subsitute smart network drivers for smart wi etc.

I have the same problem with vaio nw21mf/w
Under device manager>CD/DVD-ROM> PIONEER DVD-RW DVRTD09 driver details i found:
    C:\\windows\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
    C:\\windows\system32\drivers\PxHlpa64.sys

could this be the problem for high fan noise?

Moofo is running around in a large number of unrelated threads posting the same "solution" in each one as if this was some magic sure for every issue folks have. In one such post moofo even posted a link to a Microsoft supplied list of fixes applied by an OS service pack as if it were a list of problems this PxHelp2 "fix" would cure. I'd say the likelihood of this having any effect is pretty slim.
