Fans in my new Sony Vaio VPCEE3E0E seem to be working pretty hard, help?

I recently bought this laptop, here are the system specs:

.MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
.AMD Athlon II P340 Dual Core CPU
    .3 gig's of DDR3 RAM
.ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series
    .Toshiba 320 GB hard disc.

Since I bought it the fans seem to come on and off every 30 seconds or so regardless of the task at hand, the machine temp (according to speedfan stays around the low 50oc) the fan is not that loud but its definitely noticeable.

Is this a fault or is this normal operation? will the fan inside wear out faster than most laptops if its on almost every half a minute?

Should I return the laptop? Should I invest in a cooling pad? any fixes?

The other laptops I own don't make noticeable sounds, at least not so often.
    does your fan work hard?

    Thanks
