    Hello all! It's been a while :D

My Vaio's 8600GS is on it's last legs and unfortunately I am outside of the 4 year "warranty window" (from date of purchase) and Sony say I'm not eligible for a free repair. I'm not giving up yet though... in the UK you get 6 year sales contract with the retailer from purchase in which you can request a free repair/replacement if the product is inherently faulty.

To those who have got a repair, was the replacement free of any defect i.e. was the GPU from a new batch etc? Or are they just replacing them with GPU's which could end up failing again? If they are still defective chips, I'm probably going to argue for a replacement/refund instead!

    Cheers.

I am in the same boat as you.

Why are you worrying about the GPU replacement when it is still functioning well?

No its definetly failed - seeing distorted characters and stripes on bootup and I can only get into safe mode (in which I keep seeing red stripes overlap everything).

Quite a coincidence it fails when the warranty finishes.

This is usual problem of VGN-FZ series.
And Sony not more repair FZ only has 2 years extended warranty. And they replaced whole MBX where Nvidia was re-baled.

You want probably fix this laptop?

So are they replacing them with motherboards which still have a defective GPU?
I came across this website ( NvidiaDefect), which has lots of support for users with a similar issue. I think it has some resources for users in the US but it's mainly oriented for UK residents I think.

probably not now - depends when your warranty expired
due to Sony set a rule 2 years warranty from time of purchase and another extra 2 years for MBX only nvidia failure
