Previous computer I had was an HP. Sucked. Burned out.
General user. might play counter strike once in awhile but otherwise
Office, Skype and movies for the most part.

Looking at A Sony Vaio VGN-NS11
    https://www.inet.se/datorer/baerbara/sony/ns-serien/1968497/
    Cost about €630

    Are Sony's reliable?
Something about them I should know?

It got my attention cuz its quite compact for a 15" laptop. Need something to transport to school but don't really want to sacrifice visual area.

Agreed, and they are overpriced relative to other brands. Why don't you post the FAQ here so we can help you properly? :)

My 8 year old Sony notebook is still working.
Sony is still the best in term of performance vs portability. Sony FW 16.4" notebook for example is thinner and lighter than 15.4" notebook from other manufacturers. But if you want pure performance, Sony is not the one to buy since the video cards tend to be slower than the one from other manufacturers.

Certain Sony models but not all of them have the brightest and best looking screens. I am not sure about the NS but the one with XBrite HiColor, XBrite FullHD and XBrite DuraView are the best screens.

Performance has to be decent but I also want a thinner lighter computer also. i found the 15" vaio more compact than some 14" by other brands.

I have two Vaio's and pleased with the purchase. My latest purchase was an FW just two weeks ago. If I were to purchase another laptop, it would be another Vaio.

Here are two models that I am looking at. I listed the differences below. Besides them they the same computer. Price wise the NS11M cost $115 more. Is it worth it?

    Intel Pentium DualCore T3200
    2 GB RAM
    Graphics Intel GMA 4500M,
    802.11 b/g

    Sony Vaio NS11M
    Intel Core 2 Duo T5800
    3 GB RAM
    Graphics Intel GNA 4500MHD
    802.11 b/g/n

Performance wise, Sony weakness is just the video card. So, if your requirement is not heavily dependent on video card, ie you don't play games like Crysis or you don't mind to play games at lower resolution with lower setting, Sony is still a good choice. CPU wise, you can get up to C2D 2.93 GHz and 8GB RAM on most models so software that depends just on the CPU raw power would benefit.

On the other hand, if pure performance is paramount, Alienware, Sager and Asus are better. But they are BULKY, HEAVY and the screen is not as good as Sony.

Yeah I don't play Crysis. Found it was cheaper to buy a PS3 and then buy a computer to last for a few years just used for normal use than try to keep up with the latest for PC gaming hardware. Computers go obsolete so quickly IMO.

Acer is my least favorite computer just because they look so fat. I found a ASUS that was quite competitive in the hardware department and quite slim.
Edging towards Sony though. Always liked their stuff.
