So i recently bought myself the Sony Vaio VGN-FE38GP from a Hong Kong sony shop...

    1) I love the laptop so far but one thing that bugs me is the screen resolution. it only goes up to 1280x800. considerin it's using a geforce go 7600, i would think it could do better and the screen is 15.4 inch! is there anyway to force it higher?

    2) what utility do u guys use to check cpu temp? i've recently installed 'speed fan 4.32.' is it a good program or is there better? and what exactly is temp1 and temp2 mean?

    3) my computer is partition into C and D drives. i want to keep everything out of D: drive besides my personal files or when i choose to install programs on it. I keep gettin the "vaio entertainment" folder created on my D: drive. what exactly is creating the folder and how would i change the folder destination? i've changed all i could and this is one thing i can't find. there is also a folder called "contents" which i know is sony related also but not sure how it's from.

    4) i'm a fan of keepin my computers clean. i use ccleaner occasionally and tweaknow regcleaner pro. one thing i don't have a third party utility for is defrag. i use the windows provided defrag util. and it seems to be okay. what do u guys think? or maybe i should get another? is there any good freeware defrag util.?

    5) lastly, are there any sony provided programs most u think is useless and worth uninstallin' to save space? i've uninstall a lot of stuff already and just wonderin' if there are some hidden ones or what not.

    6) ok! last lastly... is there a good laptop cooler for a 15.4 inch laptop? i know of the cooler master wide screen laptop cooler, but the fe laptop has its mic and headphone jack in the front so the cooler blocks it. any suggestions?

anyhow, any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot! :)

    1) No.
    2) Use Network Hardware Control (NHC)
    3) Don't understand question
    4) CCleaner + Disk Cleanup + Windows Defrag
    5) Anything that you don't need - use your judgment
    6) Lots of options. Please search through the threads here at NBR.

Welcome to the forums and happy new laptop!
1.There are no *good* ways of doing this. The native resolution (the resolution written on the Spec. sheet) is 1280x800 to force something higher needs hardware modification which will surely void the warranty.Anyway even if you do this, it'll never look as good as 1280x800 because the laptop looks best when it's on the native resolution.
2.Please explain, are these the only temps that can you see (are there some highlighted "CPU") ?
3.If your don't need the vaio entertainment kill it...
4.Windows defrag is good. There are alternatives which I don't remember...
5.There are many guides on how to kill the "bloatware", you can find them on the forum.
    6.Targus chillmate is very good.

    thanks for the replies!

yeah, there is one for HDD, CPU 0 and CPU 1 (one for each core) and Temp1 and Temp2. I'm just curious if Temp1 and Temp2 are just different sensors inside the laptop or sensors in specific locations.

i tried to kill the folder or just move it. but it wont let me. it's being controlled by something. but ill try to figure this one out myself.

i also have another question regarding the software sonic stage. the laptop came with two sonic stage software: one is for recordin music and the other for general entertainment purposes if i remember correctly (eg. mp3s, etc).

i uninstalled the general entertainment one and i still get its software directory left behind. there's a file called SSAAD.exe that is still being startup when windows boots up. the name is called sonic stage atrac hard disk monitor. is there any use to this? can i just delete the folder containing it / disable it being startup?

i searched the internet about this file and i couldn't find what exactly is the use for it.

    Enjoy your Vaio FE.

I feel your loss -- I wish I could bump the 1280x800 higher but it's not possible.

It is the one thing I slightly dislike about the FE.
