    Hi,

I have just bought a VGN-SZ2XP and everything is working very nice so far, except the Fingerprint Scanner e.g. Instead of loggin in with a Username and Password it should be possible to just use the fingerprint scanner, but it's just working like every 20 times I try it. I have done all the required settings like scanning all the fingers, but it doesn't work.

If I move my finger over the scanner it just does nothing. Has anyone experienced this problem yet?

    Thanks,
    Vincent

Try swiping it slower instead of instantly..maybe that could be an issue

I tried it slow, fast, hard, soft and all the possible combinations, with my fingers except the thumbs it doesn't really work. Most of the time the scanner is not reacting if I move my finger over it.

The funny thing is that the registration, where I have to scan all the fingers 3 times worked fine and also the test application worked.

Here ist the really weired thing now. The fingerprint scanner takes all the fingers of my girlfriend with no problem. With her fingers it just works like it should work and I expected.

    Any idea?

I had a job recently that required me to use my hands allot, at the end of the day they were trashed, scanner would have problems. Maybe your finger prints changed due to damage? There was another time when I couldn't logon with the prints due to dried boogers. Pick your nose often (^_^)?

My fingers are all alright and actually they are very smooth. As I said, the registration and the test worked. The only thing not really working is, if I want to login into Windows and if I want to activate the "Bio Menu" with my fingers. It only works with the thumb!

I have just activated the boot security option. So now after the vaio logo comes after turning the notebook on, I am asked to swipe the finger over the finger reader. Now surprise...it works perfectly with all my finger, with no problem at all !!!

So now I thing it has something to do with the Protector Suite Windows Software.

    What do you thing?

I have just tried the finger print reader on a SZ1XP and it worked, therefore I really think its a software problem. The Version of th Protector Suite of the SZ1XP was:

    5.2.0.2564

the one on my SZ2XP is:

    5.3.0.2813

Is ther anyone of the SZ1XP Users who can tell me where I can download the Version 5.2.0.2564, how can I get this?

When my SZ had 512Mb RAM the fingerprint scanner worked quite well.
When my SZ had 1024Mb RAM my fingerprint scanner was nearly incapable of reading my fingerprint.
When my SZ had 2048Mb RAM my fingerprint scanner worked quite well.

I tested this on both an SZ160 and an SZ90. I had since sold my 160 and memory so no longer can test this anymore. (And cannot be arsed, neither)

It may sound weird, but since I had to install a patch onto Windows to get hibernate to work with 2048Mb of memory, I not longer am surprised by anything.

Yes it could be, but as I said I have tested it on a SZ1XP and the notebook also had 1 Gig of RAM. But its worth a try to plug in another Gig of RAM. I will let you know, what happend.

Anyway someone has the older Version of the Protector Suite?

I've found that the environmental conditions and the condition of ones fingers impact scanning a lot. At work, I'd say I get 90%+ success when scanning. At home things are similar. At my hotel success drops to almost zero.

    Things I have observed:
    1) When my hands are completely dry scanning does not work (completely dry meaning just wasked and dried or still clean and cool - eg no oils or prespiration) When completely dry I find the scenner will detect a scan by simply placing a finger on the scanner, then tell me I scanned too fast when I did not even have a chance to move my finger. Held there it will detect multiple scans - I can reproduce this even retraining my fingerprints as I can the below two points.
    2) When my hands are in thier "normal" condition - clean, warm, but with trace oils and/or prespiration scanning seems to work fine. In this condition the first scan or any finger works the vast majority of the time.
    3) If you can't scan you can artificially wet (not dripping but moist) your fingers and it will usually scen then but not always accurately. In this condition I almost always get a scan but usually get told there was a poor quality scan or just no match.

The first time I tried to scan in my hotel I thought the scanner had broken but then the next day at work it was fine. I tried a few things and discovered the above. So in some envrionments I just type in my three passwords (system, hard drive, windows), and in others I know the scans work fine.

Maybe this will spawn more experiments that can maybe come up with some technological explanation.

and it is not provided for download from UPEK web pages. Please contact SONY support with your request.
Please note: NONE of the Protector Suite versions available for download from UPEK pages works on SONY notebooks."

Thanks for all your input. Of course I tried already donwloading the old version from the Upek Site and as TheBugMan mentioned thats not working.

Regarding the different environmental conditions and the conditions of the fingers. I don't really thing so, that this is the reason. Because as as I have already written, I have activated the boot security option, meaning that I have to swipe my finger over the finger print reader, after the VAIO Logo shows up and before booting windows. Here it really works with ease 100% and with any of my fingers. And it also works during the registration process.

It doesn't work at the Windows Login and if I try to activate the Bio Menu!

Again thank you very much for your inputs, but read my comments! As I have written:

I have activated the boot security option, meaning that I have to swipe my finger over the finger print reader, after the VAIO Logo shows up and before booting windows. Here it really works with ease 100% and with any of my fingers. And it also works during the registration process.

It doesn't work at the Windows Login and if I try to activate the Bio Menu!

It can't be because of the environment or the conditions of my fingers, because after I swipe my finger during the boot sequence, where it perfectly works, it takes maximum 1 minute when I see my Windows desktop and than here I try to activate the Bio Menu and it doesen't work! And if I try to register my fingers again it works....activating the Bio Menu doesn't work....registering works....

My sz220p works quite well. Just put the finger flat and try a smooth wipe with soft pressing.

could it be possible some driver or application software in your notebook confilicts with the protector suite? Otherwise, why doesn't the scanner work simply after windows is started?

I haven't installed any new Software or new drivers. And as I said if I register my fingers it works and it also works with both of my thumbs it only doesn't work with all the other fingers!
