Well, my new laptop arrived today, and I've pretty much finished setting it up. Typing this post is the first real typing I've done on it, and I'm finding the keyboard rather different from the Toshibas I'm accustomed to. I hope I get used to it quickly.
Pros- certainly fast, looks fantastic, nice screen (bear in mind I'm accustomed to the x-glass screens from my toshiba m30x, and that was a pretty good screen, so I'm not left gasping and breathless by this one, although it is.. nice!) Obviously I've still to really put the machine through it's paces, but I was impressed to see that there was no difference in performance whilst the anti-virus was scanning the hard drive! Then again, I replaced Norton with Anti-Virus Personal Edition so that may be a factor. I LIKE the toucpad and the placement of the buttons! Just hope they don't pack in on me...
Cons- struggling with the keyboard a bit, the lighting in the two bottom corners (especially over the start button) seems uneven, but i have to say that's only noticeable when the screen is very light generally- as it is now.. I also found one dead pixel, but it's tiny and only noticeable against a black desktop, so I won't lose any sleep over that! More seriously, the dvd drive seems rattly to me- my dog likes to like beside me when i'm using my laptop, and when she moved and brushed against the side of the machine, the tray opened. That never happened with the Toshiba, despite the fact that the optical drives on both laptops were in a similar position.
Overall, I'm pleased with this, but not totally awestricken. Hopefully that'll come as I start really testing what it can do!
ETA: I ran the full body of tests from 3Dmark03 and the final score was 4031. According to the What Laptop magazine, that puts the gaming performance into 'outstanding graphics to rival desktop machines.' Then again, the tests did not play in full widescreen resolution, which may have had something to do with it. On BenchmarX the processor result left my Toshiba lagging waaaaay behind, so on the whole, I'm very happy. I checked the screen against the M30x, and noticed a tiny ripple light effect there too- tho' I have to say it's more noticeable on the Sony, but that might be a downside of such a fabulously bright screen- even with brightness cranked up, the Tosh still doesn't compare.
