I was given this laptop to fix by one of my mom's coworkers. She complained of the screen only being visible on the left side of the screen, while the rest of the screen is nothing but vertical lines. Model number is VGN-NW235F, with an Intel GMA4500 I believe. Picture below:

Everything else about the laptop seems the still function correctly. Mouse still works, I could click on the Accessibility button on the bottom-left. The laptop doesn't recognize a spare monitor I tried hooking up via VGA, so I can't log into Windows at all due to the screen. Any suggestions?
EDIT: I figured out how to make the spare monitor work, so now I can view the display output correctly. Vertical lines are still present on the laptop's display though.

How did the damage come about? Did the lid receive unintended excessive pressure, or did the laptop fall or knock onto something hard?
I'd check the LCD connector/cable first for any damage; if that doesn't help, it's most probably the screen that needs replacing. -

I like the laptop - if you are not going to repair it I would gladly accept it as a gift?

It's not mine, it's a coworker's laptop.

I had the exact same issue on a colleague's Lenovo. Fortunately, it was under warranty. They replaced the display assembly.
