Hello, my brother has a P-M Vaio and he just noticed that he cant hold the function key + whatever on top (like adjusting brightness, volume etc). Nothing will happen. So how does he get it back into the registry? He deleted the hot key from regedit, startup and wish he didnt. its a sony FS860W

anyone?

He can try installing the drivers from Sony's support site, but I couldn't find the a FS860W there, only a FS850W. He can still try them if he wants, but I'm not sure which exact package he needs.
That, or he can look for the recovery partition on his drive. There might be an utility in the start menu that'll let him burn a recovery disc, which should contain the drivers. -
he has the recovery but how does he locate it? he doesnt know the name of the utility he needs. and do you have a link to the site for the other model?
-
I'm not really sure either, but you could try the Sony Shared Library, Sony Notebook Utilities, and Sony Notebook Control Device Driver.
As for the other model: Sony drivers page for the VGN-FS850W -
he tried it, didnt work. It has to be a simple file that he needs. He just accidentally removed the hot key from the registry run folder, and I would imagine that would be it. As long as the FN + commands are considered hot keys.

I had the same problem whereby the fn keys wouldn't work after installing a fresh copy of Windows XP. After hours of trying I finally found a solution. Although my particular Vaio model is a FS 115B, I installed the following (even though they weren't exactly for my particular model) and it worked a charm.
The following worked a treat for me.
Perform the following in this order:
1) DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE FOLLOWING:
ftp://download.sony.com/pc/SOASSL-00598800-US.EXE
THEN DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS:
2) ftp://download.sony.com/pc/SODOTH-00445800-US.EXE
3) RESTART MACHINE
4) FINALLY DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS:
ftp://download.sony.com/pc/SOOOTH-35500000-US.EXE
Please let me know whether this works for you - cheers. -
Mine work and display the status on the screen, but don't actually make any change with the exception of 'brightness'. Oh well.
