What transpired immediately before the FN keys were found to be not working? We need a bit more info to begin to help you out. Did you reinstall the OS, did you run some registry cleaner? With no more detail than "they don't work" there is little chance we can guess what might be wrong.

Did you reinstalled your own OS instead of using the recovery "F10" ?

If that is that case, you might installed the drivers in wrong order. Or missed a step of rebooting.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-sz740 that originally came with Vista . I installed Windows 7 (clean install) 64bit.
The problem is the special buttons are not working at all (eject, S1, S2, multimedia, AV Mode, onscreen display such as when you adjust volume or brightness), etc. I did install Sony Notebook utility drivers/software from that model's driver page (sonystyle.com). I rebooted as it instructed to do during install. The main software were the notebook utilities, but I installed almost everything on the list. I tried 3 times now. Still do not work.

I'd be willing to bet the issue is the SEQUENCE in which you loaded the drivers and libraries. In the thread we mentioned earlier you will find a document that describes the proper process for a 64bit clean install. Start all over and follow those directions EXACTLY! Do NOT deviate from them at all. And do NOT attempt this on the existing Windows installation. Start over from the very beginning.

So? Look... we keep telling you, go back to the original thread we told you to look at. You will find a link there with the specifics of which drivers you need and the order you need to install them in. Do this and your function keys will work again. It really is that simple.

Then you did one of four things.

    1. You didn't start over with a fresh install of the OS.
    2. You downloaded the wrong drivers.
    3. You didn't reboot the machine when told to do so.
    4. You didn't follow the order precisely.

The steps in the Clean Install Guiges are known to work.

    Gary

P.S. You really should now be asking questions in the thread Rajesh pointed you to. He and I have different models from yours and the folks in that thread will be better equipped to answer your questions.

At this point you will need to ask the questions in the thread Rajesh sent you to. The folks there will be better equipped to answer your questions as they have the same model as you.

But I will again stress that if you follow the directions EXACTLY and download the drivers from the sources contained in the directions and do the steps in precisely the right order the Function keys will work. Any deviation at all from the directions can result in failure.

Not sure what else to tell you to do now.

I just looked at the document and you are NOT following the directions at all. It very clearly tells you to download the drivers from links provded in the thread. It does not tell you to get them from the Sony site.

If you won't take the advice given to you as to how to make this work, I am afraid you are on your own.
