For the very last time-Is the Z's screen a problem?

I know I've been asking this question through and through in various threads that relate to the Z's screen, and I want to end this all here.

I'm sick and tired of having to worry about my Z's screen every here and then. I've been worrying about it since I browsed a thread in getsatisfaction.com regarding the Z's screen, although that with the VGN-Z not the VPC-Z (still, some people made comments about the VPC-Z). I've had times where I couldn't even sleep because of this. I've also dreamed about having to deal with a Sony Rep to fix my screen.

Occasionally my classmates either put their bags on top of my laptop bag, or press my laptop bag (with my laptop inside) because they felt like it. I'm getting sick and tired of worrying about my screen every here and then.

My Z is currently perfectly fine. No dead pixels, nothing on the screen except for a small piece of dust in the upper right (stuck during application of screen protector, not very noticable) and some keyboard marks (even with a cloth stuck inbetween the keyboard and screen). Am I at a risk of having problems with the screen when recurring and sustained amounts of pressure get applied? Or does it fail once you apply too much during one single time?

Honestly, I do not treat my Z cautiously and the screen is fine. There are much more important things to lose sleep over, trust me.

Just so you know, there are no generic versions of these screens and part cost is around £300.

One of the most common issues I have seen with the Z screens is key imprints from the keyboard, and it does actually state in the instruction manual to place the black cloth that comes with it between the keys and screen when the laptop is closed.

All in all quite a robust machine though, maybe carried out 3 screen replacements on these since launch. (I work for a Sony Centre that offers out of warranty repairs.)

I already have a cloth provided for me upon my purchase and yet I still get keyboard imprints. I have never forgotten to put the cloth in between the screen and keyboard every single time i closed the lid.

I just don't understand your question. You're asking if your screen will break if your friends whack it. Why don't you just make sure your friends don't do that? It's just a silly question. It's like asking if your laptop will break if it gets run over by a truck? How do you give someone an assurance either way for something like that?

Well my question is actually quite simple and sorry I know my first post is very unclear.

Is the screen actually worth worrying about? Like, should I be freaked out if the screen flexes a lot or if little pressure is applied to it? I've read through many threads where the Z's screen exhibits either distortions or dead pixels so I'm very worried that my Z will fall victim to these issues next.

    You buy a Panasonic.
Honestly, that might make the OP sleep better.

There are also places that sell special metal cases with molded foam for whatever you want to put in them, so your equipment can survive a Jeep ride in Kalahari, taxi drivers in New York City, and bellboys in Rome. Back when journalists still existed, they were popular for both cameras and laptops.

Most Z owners here wouldn't know; they have a small sample size of one to judge from. Those whose Z died are unlikely to read the forum anymore, so the bias is going to be skewed. Sometimes laptop screens die. Worrying about it isn't going to help. You take precautions that doesn't make life harder for you, like a padded laptop bag and not using it around jocks, and otherwise deal with it if it happens.

From my own anecdotal evidence, my Z's screen is fine, but the front bezel has cracked due to the plastic drying out and becoming brittle. A little bit of glue will fix that. If the display itself got problems, I'd deal with that too - either repair it, replace it (if a part can be found), live with it, or replacing the laptop. It's not worth worrying over now.

I notice you folks speak of some black cloth that game with the Z to place between the keyboard and screen, but I realise that I don't have that. I ordered from sonystyle usa website, and I have the Z13 CTO.

    I guess it's a regional thing again?

I put a microfiber cloth between the keyboard and screen. I don't ever worry about it

Yeah it's different for different regions. I have the CTO US model and didn't get a cloth. But luckily mine doesn't have the issue of the screen hitting the keyboard.

Same. I use one that came with a pair of glasses. Doesn't do much though. I still have keyboard marks all over my LCD.
