newbie here just placed pre-order for Z. Remembering my past experience with Vaio many years ago, I opted for the "fresh start" option which supposedly eliminates some trial programs.

My question is, will I miss anything good in terms of Sony software by opting for the "fresh start"? Since I don't currently have a VAIO I don't know what I will be missing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you'll be getting Vista Business -- which means you won't be getting Vista Home Premium. Will you miss anything Home Premium offers?

maybe but I think I can get that info from the Vista comparison website. I don't know if there is a similar site that compares Sony's normal software versus "fresh start" software to determine what is removed.

" Customers opting for Sony's Fresh Start could miss out on software including Microsoft Works, bundled with a trial version of Microsoft Office; Sony's Vaio Creation Suite Photo Software with a Corel Paint Shop Pro trial version; the Click to Disc video editor WinDVD; and an edition of QuickBooks Simple Start that tracked only 20 customers. ... judging from the comparison table above, personally I'd prefer Business to Home Premium. I find Remote Desktop useful when I'm at home (although I need to use another remote access tool from work to get around the proxy and firewall). Also, the media streaming etc can be done using third party tools like TVersity. The backup features in Business Edition might be useful, too.

I haven't tried Vista yet; the Z will be my first time giving it a proper try. I'm hoping SP1 will have ironed out some annoyances. :)

I could never get that darn TVersity to work consistently with my PS3. Major pain in the butt.

I got it working perfectly after many days/hours of effort. The secret is that you have to be very careful about the codecs on the server machine.

I must have been lucky, as it worked pretty much straight away for me (streaming to my X360). The bit I had trouble with was I didn't realise I needed to install an update from Microsoft on my X360 to allow it to play .avi divxs...

I use it all the time now to play downloaded programmes from BBC iPlayer and it's fantastic. Much better than watching them on a desktop PC screen. ;)
