Today I tried using portable apps from a flash drive on my FE series. Works fine except that when loading some of the larger apps (especially GIMP portable, an image editor) a funny squeaking noise comes out of the laptop. It doesn't sound like the hard drive, and it doesn't occur when transferring files normally to the flash drive, only while starting apps. Does anyone know what it is? thanks!

Are you 100% sure it isn't the hard drive. They can make some weird noises, that people have never heard before. Sometimes, they need to move the arm further out than in normal use, and so they may create a weak noise/squeak. See if this happens on other applications, and try to see where the noise comes from. If it comes from the hard disk area, then it probably is that.

It might be the hard drive using the cache, but it doesn't happen at all on other apps, even the same apps copied to the HD... only when run off of the flash drive. It seems to come from the center of the keyboard.
