won't read DVD-R? I went to go make a set of recovery discs today, it won't read the disc. I go to recovery, and start the process up, it says insert a disc into the F drive.

then i put it the DVD-R blank disc in, and it spits it right back out. I just don't get it.

I tried to manually access the disc in computer, that doesnt work either.

Any ideas? Should I use DVD-RW? or some other format?

Did you install any third party DVD burner software? If so look at this message:

    no, thats not the problem.

i know that i have a dvd burner, i used it before. just not sure what format of dvd i used.

maybe i used dvd-rw or something. but for whatever reason DVD is not working.

i looked at my F drive. it says "DVD/CDRW"

so maybe it only supports RW? or maybe it just flat out cant burn DVDs.

Look in device manager and see if there is a yellow "!" next to the device. The drive supports DVD-RW and DVD-R for sure. I am not certain about DVD+R. But I think it does support that too.

hm, well - i dont know why the DVD-R isn't working. The first time I used DVD-RW and it seemed to work fine.

this is so frustrating, it's not even a month old. lol

Hello. Please try this out...it may work. I used this on many dvd drives that failed to work..the users got so mad they were going to buy new laptops! I told them let me try something out, and this has worked every time. Good luck!

Click Start, type: Run in search and open it, type: regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor starts...

    1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
    3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
    4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
    5. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.

Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak.

    6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    7. click Yes

Now... delete the "LowerFilters" registry entry as well... if there is a .bak one leave that alone, as mentioned above for the upper filters instructions.

    Restart your PC.

Good luck man! please post back to let me know how it went.

whats more frustrating is i did this about 2-3 weeks ago, and now it randomly doesn't work.

who would have thought my dvd burner would stop working in 14 days for no reason. i havent even put anything on it besides 1 game and antivirus garbage + windows updates.

its probably windows updates too, they always screw you over.

also, i cant format the disc if the drive doesnt read the disc is there.

i tried to put a DVD in, it reads it fine.
