    Hi guys,

I'm just wondering if i order Sony Z from State with Mobile Broaddband and GPS (im from Canada) I know it wont work with Verizon here but can i just use the GPS not connecting to 3G? (like cell phone?)

Thanks in advance for any info

Probably not as it will most likely use network towers to hone in on your location. I'd wait till actual owners come in and give you a right answer :)

    Thanks Ronnie

The thing i like about US model was they installed 4gb of ram in one slot instead of 2x2 which the Canadian site offer and GPS mobile broadband included in the precofig system. The one im eyeing on is the $2500. VPCZ11CGX a perfect balance system for me :)

If you buy one and it doesn't state a carrier restriction, then the GOBI card is completely unlocked, and even if it does state a carrier lock the GPS will still be perfectly usable without having to use the mobile broadband.

So the canadian models don't come with GPS at all?

Yea i was eyeing that VPCZ11CGX too but wasn't sure about this locked to verizon thing. As long as GPS works free in northamerica that'd be good.

Its not real GPS, it uses cell towers triangulation. You could alway buy a Bluetooth or USB GPS thats more accurate anyways.

I think there are two parts to the solution: (1) getting the location (GPS receiver/triangulation) (2) the navigation program that makes use of the location to do, say, turn by turn nav. The Gobi card achieves (1), I don't know what program the Z will run to make use of the location

So the gobi card can be inserted into models without the GPS/WWAN hardware spec?

I don't know for sure. I think it needs (1) the connector to the motherboard (2) the antenna (3) the sim card slot (or if going the CDMA way, maybe not). I think (2) can be solved by using one of the WLAN antennas (mine's coming with 3). I hope (1) is present, need a closeup pic of a WWAN-less Z motherboard. I believe I've seen the slot for the sim card in a WWAN-less Z, but I need to confirm as well...

Edit: Missed this post by nutman :(

    Hi,

My friend has a current European Gobi card in his current Z as well and it work wonderfully without 3G. In the current Z section there are a tuturials of how to activate it. Im so close to buying one but again i want to get confirmation from you guys since i live just a few hours away from State and i always driving down there to shop so it's no biggie :)

i can confirm all model with CTO will not come with WWAN you need to get the preconfigure model
