I've recently (the past few days) been experiencing issues with playing Starcraft 2 on the Z1 (in speed mode with "performance mode" fan setting on).

I haven't had issues before because I play on the lowest settings.

However, in the past few days I've noticed an issue where the frame rate goes up and down intermittently... seemingly in concert with the fan slowing down while I play.

This never occurred before (the fan was always going full blast... believe me, I could hear it) has any experienced anything similar? Or - even better - have they experienced something similar and fixed the issue?

Edit: to clarify SC2 is the only game I play.

In power options, switch to performance mode and see if the fan speed stays full blast. Fans do eventually die, and their bearings wear out. Get a temperature monitoring utility to monitor the temperatures of the CPU and GPU. If they are excessive, action is needed.

^ It currently is in performance mode unfortunately... it is the only way to play games.

Can you recommend a good monitoring utility and is there a comparison table to be able to gauge what is excessive?

Try CPUID Hardware Monitor. There are many others out there, including SIW Software Information For Windows, and some paid ones like Everest.
