My VAIO TZ with the 48GB SSD drive has died and I need to get the data off of there. I think I can figure out how to remove it from the machine, but I'm not sure how I can go about sticking it in an enclosure and hooking it up to another machine. I know S/ATA drives have enclosures that can be connected via USB or Firewire. Does anyone know of any similar enclosures for the SSD drive in the TZ?
Also, would I run into issues from Vista over getting access to my files on there (documents, Outlook PST files, etc.)?
Thanks!

tell us how ur SSD died? thought it was extremely reliable.

The SSD would have either a SATA or IDE interface. You need to find out which (get the model number from a program called HDTune and look it up). If the drive does not work you'll probably have to pull the drive out of the notebook and look at it.
Also, you need to know if you have a 1.8" or 2.5" SSD drive. I'm guessing 1.8" from what I know of the laptop.
From there, get an enclosure that works for that size and interface. SSD and mechanical HDDs will work since the interface technology is the same.
If the drive truly is dead though, you might not be able to recover data. But this is your best shot. -
It almost sounds like the system died and not the SSD specifically. Is this the case?
If so, the SSD can be removed and an external HD package purchased which the SSD can be placed in. Its a simple matter of plugging in the USB from the external HD to get the information.
Please advise otherwise and also advise of the SSD make and model.
I handy way of finding out if it is the SSD is if you have another HD you can throw into the system. -
Hi,
Thanks for the responses. And yes, my machine is dead, not the SSD. I posted another thread in this forum a couple weeks ago where I described how I spilled a cup of soda on the machine on an airplane when we hit some turbulence. The machine actually ran for about a day after which it decided it didn't want to turn on ever again. I sent it into Sony for a repair estimate and they told me they would have to repair the entire machine, at a cost of $5000. At that point, I just decided to buy another one since that is cheaper.
So I need to get the data off the dead machine's SSD. I'm not sure which model number the drive is, but the machine was a TZ-195X/N. I suppose I'll just open it up and determine whether it has the IDE or SATA adapter on it, it is easy enough to tell them apart. Thanks for the help! -
Buy it again brand new and still have over $1500 to spare! Laughable! -
Wow, $5k is crazy for a repair. I'm not buying Sony any time for sure now...
Don't you have a warranty on the system? SSD drives are so new I'm almost positive you'd have to have a warranty! -
Standard warranties do not cover accidental damage like spilling a soda all over the keyboard of your 3 week old laptop
Fortunately, I purchased the machine with a corporate Amex platinum card which provides some accidental coverage. So while I won't get the entire cost of the machine back, I will at least get over 50% of it. -
You seem to be handling it pretty well. I would be complaining to Sony to no end if it happened to me

The loveboy doctor is lying.
There is no such repair at sony. There are three tiers at Sony
Cosmetics/Minor and Major
I believe they were 150/700/1300.
If they loose money on the 1300$, which I can't see how, they have the right to refuse the repair.
The OP is trolling outta his nose.
Even Sony Repair Centers that are not affiliated with Sony directly don't offer such pricing.

As for the drive, the SSDs are ZIF drives.
You can use the following enclosure to get the data out

Thanks for the info on the ZIF drives |Sony|.
As for the pricing, that is the number that the CSR quoted me when I called Sony's support line to find out the status of my repair. They had initially told me that major repairs cost $699, but have the potential of going higher. The service rep said that the technician who examined the machine said it would have to be totally replaced due to liquid being spilled on it, at a cost of $5000. So my understanding was that they weren't going to be repairing the machine but replacing it.
If anyone has any suggestions on how I could fight it out with Sony on this, I'm open to hearing them. -
send it to nexttronix. the reps at sony are dumb as a brick and instead of telling you NO to the repair, someone had slipped a smelly one by giving you that number if they indeed did.
Here is the deal. In the TZ, if you spilled liquid, it most likely got into the speakers and the keyboard. Motherboard is another option, ALTHOUGH the keyboard design in the TZ makes is nearly impossible for anything to get beyond the keyboard.
Look on how massive the keyboard is:

Let's say the liquid got into the speakers and into the mobo, which is doubtful, then a mobo + keyboard is ~900$ and should be covered under the 700$ range.
Dispute the findings with sony, ask for someone else besides the regular 'Serge' over there.
I had laptops returned 3 times to them since they had not completed the repairs the way they were supposed to.
It is all about *****ING *****ING AND *****ING with sony repair centers. -
Yea, I can see how that makes sense. I was honestly blown away when they quoted me the number, based on the $699 number I was told when filing my repair claim with them initially. When I heard $5K I was extremely upset to say the least.
I can understand what you're saying in hassling them to repair the product, but at the end of the day, I depend on this machine for my livelyhood. And while I have another machine I can use for work, it isn't one that is set up for me to be as productive as I had the TZ in terms of being able to travel and work on a plane with it. The cost isn't minor for buying another one, but it is something that won't put me out.
Thanks for all the help! -
you are right. I would be torching my TZ if that happens
