Getting SZ to wake from sleep by opening the lid in Windows 7

So I've been rebuilding my old SZ160. I stuck an Intel 330 SSD in it and the thing is surprisingly fast. By reading the guides I've managed to get the unit working almost perfectly in Windows 7 32-bit (except for the known issue with Nvidia brightness controls after resuming from sleep), but one little minor annoyance continues to bug me.

When I close the lid, the unit goes to sleep. When I open the lid... nothing happens, I have to hit a key.

Now, I know this function is dependant on Sony's driver offering it. It's not built-in to Windows. And I can find out how to make this and ONLY this work in Windows 7, but if I do so all other power management breaks.

I have a Vaio Power Management driver set dated from 2008, and if I install it everything works fine except for the lid. There's no setting like on other models.

I also have a Vaio Power Management driver set dated from 2007, and if I install this (only), the Vaio Control Center offers an option for "Settings for the behavior when opening the LCD screen lid". I can configure this to wake from suspend/hibernate, and sure enough it works perfectly. The problem... all other power management breaks. Windows can't read the power management profiles, and the thing seems to be stuck in a perminant "ultimate battery" state and keeps wanting to shut off the network / audio / DVD / etc. If I try to view the advanced power settings (where you get the Sony-specific settings like shutting off audio) it just crashes.

Now, if I over-install the 2008 driver set, power management starts working again. The option for the lid remains in Control Center, but it doesn't work - opening the lid does nothing.

If I try to install the 2008 version followed by the 2007 version, the 2007 installation stops with an error stopping Vaio power control.

Has anyone ever got this working for the SZ series? The fact that this specific function CAN work using this old driver version gives me hope that it might be possible to somehow make it work with a version that functions properly elsewhere.

    Any ideas?
