Hello all after doing a bit or research because I am by no means a programmer but I have rigged up my sony vaio vgn-fz240e so that I may change the brightness on the backlight of the lcd. First of all download this file.

Unzip the whole backlight folder to your c:\ drive.
Navigate into the redist folder and install the vcredist application, this application is just the microsoft visual c++ that is required for the actual program to run after that double click on the install.bat that is also located in the redist folder.

After this go back up to the main folder backlight and double click on any of the dim programs ranging from 1 which is darkest to 5 which is brightest. after running one of these a box will come up asking you to register at the site but just wait 5 seconds and press the ok button that pops up and there you go your screen should dim. You can place shortcuts of these programs on the desktop or use a shortcut key to run it instead of having to keep navigating into the folder and running the programs every time. Some thing i have noticed is that when you change the power settings in the power settings manager it changes the screen back to the brightest setting so you will have to run one of the dim programs again. When you restart or go into hybernate or when your computer goes to sleep, you will have to run it again once you start your computer back up.

Like the post says it is somewhat ghetto but this is the only thing that is working right now for intel chips but perhaps with this information some programmers around can use this to find a better solution.

    I hope this helps

i just tried this on my CR w/xp and the screen flickers and it gets worse as i choose a lower dim setting.
    But very cool! =)

Sorry to hear that, did you follow the steps outlined? If the microsoft c++ is not installed it will not work properly. Perhaps it only works on FZ models but it will be discovered as more people try this fix.

It's not a matter of running properly without the C++ runtime, if the C++ runtime is not installed it won't run at all.

Gary you are right, i tried it without the runtime and it did not work at all but if there are more people trying this please reply so that we may get a better understanding on what models this is working on and what models it does not work on.

depending on how you wrote the program - and i am far from being a programer - i think maybe because our screen sizes differ that the wattages vary on output, and maybe your formula is just specific to your screen size.

    Thats my thought on it.

I did not write the program, i picked it up at a help site for the downgrade to xp on sony vaio laptops, it did not have a specific model type listed but i tried it and it worked for me so maybe i just got lucky. I am not a programmer either.

    Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!!!!!!

I am a programmer and the last thing we want is someone who is NOT a programmer mucking about at a very low hardware level like this. No offense, but this could potentially be very dangerous to the health of someone's display. I have no idea what or how this application does what it purports to do, but I know that driver level stuff like this should be left to real programmers. I know you are trying to be helpful, but this sort of programming is not the right place to get your feet wet.

    Bringing up an old thread...
It seems that no one has posted back up on this entire forum about a fix for the FN + brightness.

I decided to login to my xp partition today to see if i could try anything new. I finally got the intel gfx driver to install, and tried to re-install all of the items sony has listed on their support site for my notebook.
    Still FAIL....haha

I recall finding a newer version of the notebook utilities and I ran it once before and it showed brightness up and down, but i didnt have the driver installed at that time, so it never worked.

Perhaps people have just given up? I'm completely fine with vista, but I guess I'm bothered by unsolved issues, and have some spare time on my hands now to do some digging. =)
