After a number of phone calls with Sony, company reps have confirmed that there are issues with the accuracy of what's shown on the website as the available Nvidia GPU on these two series. It's sounding like both new lines are coming out with the Go 6400 card which has 64MB of on board RAM. I beleive this card can use up to 192 of system memory via the "turbocache". Sony sales folks say they need to get this straightened out internally before they confirm it, but I do have the transcript of a chat session form 9/21 that says the FS790 comes with 64MB of video RAM. Sure hope this turns out to be true.

    Just got this e-mail:

I have good news! The NVIDIA Graphics card is a 6400- 64 dedicated memory. That would be for the FS790 and the ready to ship notebooks that offer that card. If you would like to make your purchase feel free to call me at the number below.

    Thanks!

Question: What's going to run Doom 3 engine games faster? GeForce Go 6400 64MB or Mobility Radeon X700 64MB? I bought a Gateway 8510GZ yesterday and it comes with the X700. Well, just wondering. It's not like I'd return the Gateway or anything. :)

The X700, by a huge longshot. Remember that the 6400 ~ X600. The difference between an X600 and an X700 is almost two fold.

Don't know, despite the X700 being a whole lot faster and all, I might exchange my Gateway 8510GZ and pay a little extra for the FS790. The Gateway is a great machine, but problem is, stability's a major issue. Imagine your brand new laptop crashing the very first time you try a game... dissapointing. I can barely surf the net with Norton Security enabled either. I bet Sony VAIOs won't have such an issue with stability.

Togus, are you absolutely sure the FS7xx series have 64MB of video memory? Sonystyle Canada still lists the FS760 as having the GeForce Go 6400 w/ support for 128MB of Turbocache memory.

Pretty sure.... if you go to the US Sony Style page and look under the Spec's tab for 790s it says it can be equipped with the Go 6400 and the Go 6400 does have 64 MB of onboard RAM. If you go to the configuration page it still (last time I looked) has the GPU as the Go 6200 (which has 32 MB). I've now got e-mail messages from Sony reps saying the machine comes with 64MB of dedicated video memory. Of course, the true test is to hear from someone who has bought one and has it in their hot little hands.

"While the Go 6400's performance is probably on par with an X300 with dedicated memory, the 6200 should generally be avoided."

Shouldn't be too bad though Doom 3 won't play at acceptable framerates above 800x600 medium quality.

Don't know how accurate this is, but its rumored to get 3000-3100 point results in 3DMark 2003 and 1100-1200 in 3DMark 2005. Not too bad for a low-end part, but not exceptionally great either.

edit: For your reference, the GeForce 6200 (desktop; 128MB dedicated memory) gets 1305 points in 3DMark 2005.

With HP making the X700 GPU available in the Dv4000 (reportedly by Monday), I have a new machine I need to consider. These new GPU choices in 15.4s make this a nice time to be buying a new lappy.

Sony will be offering a similarly spec'ed 15.4" laptop in October. Or you can jump at the 14" model with an X700 right now.

Do you mean that the FS series will get the X700 in October? Or is it a new model? Do you also know if Sony will have any 14inch widescreen models (e.g. FJ series) with X700? Thanks.
