When I'm using Internet Explorer, my Sony SZ randomly goes back when I hit the touchpad. Is it because I'm hitting the touchpad in a certain way that makes it go back, or because there's something wrong with my notebook?

I know my hp dv5000 uses Synaptics touchpad drivers, and in a setting called "Tap Zones" you can tap a certain part of the pad to navigate backward and forward in a browser. That's most likely the case for you.

Go to Mouse properties in Conrol Panel.

The upper left part controls the backwards-forwards fuction of the IE. The right and the bottom fuction as scroll bars.
