I recently re-installed XP Pro. Everything works fine exept there is no sound. I've tried all day to get this to work but nothing. Some facts:
- I hear the Sony welcome sound when the system first starts
- I can hear beeps, but no real audio
- It does not detect any sound card on boot up
- It does not show any missing drivers or hardware issues in the control panel.
When I try to install the Realtek sound driver from sony, it gives me the following error messages:
- Cann't find match realtek HDAudio Inf File
and
- Realtek HD audio driver setup failure
I've done research done the following:
- downloaded the drivers directly form Realtek
- tried to install the intel 915 chipset audio driver
- Installed the MS hotfix for UAA that could have caused this problem
Not sure what to do now. I guess to start, why isn't my computer auto-detecing my sound card (plug and play)? Any help on this or any other advice on how to solve is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Aaron

I had a very similar problem the other day AC97 (realtek) I broke my Xfi card trying to mod it so had to go back to onboard. After taking out the creative drivers and going into my bios and turning my onboard back on.
Windows would not find the hardware for the life of me....
I fixed it with a series of things.
First make sure you have the sound turned on in bios.
Next boot into safe mode and go into your device manager and take out anything in the audio portion, then go into your control panel and add/remove programs and make sure you uninstall any sound drivers.
Reboot and see if windows says "new hardware found" and it will self install its own drivers.
After that you should be able to install your own updated drivers just fine.
If it doesnt work right away try one more additonal reboot. It didnt work for me right away it was kind of picky for some reason.
I may have had a bad connection between my audio module and my mobo tho.
If you mess around with it for abit im sure you will get it fixed like I did. -
Thanks for the help. I uninstalled all the sound drivers and re-started, and it did not auto install or detect any sound drivers. Now I go do to my device manager and there are no listings for sound devices. I tried to go into the bios to see if the sound was turned off, but I could not see where to turn it on/off?
My bios is very basic, is there always a place to control the sound in the bios? Any advice on how to turn it on, as this is my only guess for why it is not working.
Thanks,

Its usually pretty self explanitory, somthing like "onboard devices" or what ever chip your sound is like mine would say "AC90" ect.
You can try to look up guides specific to your notebook bios.
Its possible you have a bad piece of hardware too, often times even tho you dont think its possible it just is.
Going crazy trying to get my sound to work w/ vgn-s460P
