I am considering buying an SR directly from Sonystyle.com, but I am not sure if it is a good deal or not. I know that the SR200 is coming out, but from what ive read there isnt really anything worth waiting for, since I dont want Blu-ray, or care too much about a better GPU (if it is upgraded).

    Here are the specs:

320 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive [5400 rpm]
    ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3470
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T9600 (2.80GHz)
Microsoft® Windows Vista® Business with Service Pack 1
    4 GB DDR2-SDRAM (DDR2-800, 2GBx2)

The price after all the discounts available right now: $1688

    Thanks for any advice

i think it's a fair price... you're not getting a killer deal, but you're definitely not getting ripped off. i doubt you could find a better price for that configuration. do it!

That's a good price.... but, just for perspective i paid 1450 for...

    - P8400 2.26ghz
    - 2Gb of Ram
    - 160gb HD
    - ATI 3470
    - Vista Home Premium
    - Office 2007
    - 2 year ADH warranty
    - Vaio Smart Protection Case
    - Vaio Laser Mouse

Which came out to a grand total of 1950 + 150(for Office 2007 which was free during promo) = 2100 or something crazy before all of the discounts were applied. So, point being, perhaps you should stick it out until the winter promotions, but it is a good deal and you definetly wont regret the purchase either way.

Again for perspective - I ordered the setup in my sig with a neoprene and smart protection case and the total came out to $1,700 before anything from the Sony VISA.

We would basically have the same setup except that the T9600 v T9400 and the ATI 3470 wasn't for me.

I used the campus bundle($300 off with warranty + 2 accesories), Sony took 100 bucks off the 1400 dollar starting price of the SR, it was tax free weekend in MA, Sony had another additional promo of free upgrade to 2gb, free upgrade to 160gb HD, and free Office 2007. In addition, i got ANOTHER 50 bucks off later, so it was 1400 due to my $50 cash back. All in all, i think i got around 600 bucks or so worth of discounts...

there's also a $200 coupon for the SR right now, click $Laptop Deals in the top right.

I got the system in my sig for $1200 after campus deal (2yr ADH warranty + acc's), coupon, and Sony Visa $100 credit.

Can someone explain to me how the 200$ coupon works? I see no option during configuration or at checkout to "apply" the coupon code? Also, what's the process for doing the "campus deal", I assume thats the equivalent of a student/educational discount?

    1. When you checkout, you have the option of using a ecoupon which will save you $200 - "VAIO200SR". It ends tomorrow I think...
    2. The campus deal was automatically applied ($300 off) when you picked an extended plan and two accessories. It is no longer available though :(

All I did was configure it as I wanted, they have the 50% off deal on upgrades, so the T9600 upgrade, the ram upgrade and the hard drive upgrade were cheaper than normal, and then I applied the $200 off SR coupon.

The actual price for me is going to be 4% less, since I get cash back for ordering through my credit card.

The upgrade deal expires tommorrow I believe and the coupon expires on the 26th (I may have those reversed).
