I received my FZ290 over a week ago but haven't had much time with it due to heavy work schedule. One thing I did notice was when I pick it up and carry it vertical with the hinge down it would gap open about a quarter of an inch at the top. I don't think this will cause a problem but I thought it would stay closed completely like it does when sitting flat. Overall, the build quality seems very good and when sitting flat there are no gaps or strange alignments. I'm just curious it anyone else with a FZ noticed this also.

Yes the lid is pretty fragile and will eventually stay slightly open when laid flat. This happens for me too.

Thanks to those who replied. It seems the screen opens very easy, actually falls open, for the first quarter inch or so. I suppose this is to make it easy to grasp the screen and open it fully. I almost wish they hadn't done away with some kind of latching device to keep the screen closed. I try to open the screen carefully as to not put alot of pressure on one side but I worry that eventually my FZ won't lay flat when closed.

I carry mine back and forth to work every day since July. I always open it from the center not an edge and it still lays perfectly flat.

I do keep a microfiber cloth over the keyboard when I close the lid. My last Sony wound up with small marks on the screen where the key tops were able to contact the LCD surface, ever so slightly. The cloth prevents that.

Mine gapped out of the box. The lid hinges are tight, but the first 1/4 inch is loose. At first it bothered me and then I realized it doesn't matter. Part of it is that the motion eye camera rubber bumpers boost it up when closed, although I don't think that's a huge bump up. But yeah, It doesn't close snugly.

    Mine is ok but....

they keyboard isn't flat. You can actually see it raised in one spot but luckily it doesn't touch the screen when closed. Bla.

Again, thanks for all the replies. Overall I'm happy with the FZ. It's my first notebook so I don't have much to compare it to. I spent the evening trashing bloatware and adding my own virus protection, etc. Once I get it setup with the programs and configuration I want then I will mirror to an external HD. Being I already made the recover disks and will backup to a HD-does it make sense to delete the recovery partition to recoup drive space? I'll have to look for instructions on deleting the partition - I'm sure it is somewhere in this forum.

If you delete the partition, make sure you burn recovery DVDs first just in case of catastrophe.

Yes there are instructions here for deleting it. But, unless you REALLY need the 7 gig of space, it is a nice insurance policy to have it there in case your original DVD's become lost or unusable.
