Trying to upgrade my graphics card. I am looking at the XFX GeForce 8800GT, with PCI Express 2.0 x16 interface. My question is will this card be compatable with a Sony VAIO Model name VGN FZ240E and Model number PCG-394L?
Bonus question, has anyone had success playing Battlefield 2 online on this laptop and how will this card compete with Windows Vista 32 bit?

Um, that graphics card is a desktop card. They cannot physically fit inside a laptop. Not to mention that connections are a lot different.

The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
Not possible IMHO.

You cannot upgrade your laptop graphics card!
I think you have an X3100 integrated gpu?
You should be able to run Battlefield2 all low with steady framerates for online play. -
and about BF2, no it does not work. I thought and was told it would. What happens is I installed everything just fine, but when the program starts, I get the first BF2 graphic and then before the game loads, it goes back to desktop and the program does not load. It just quits. Any insight would be appreciated. -
(where you messing with me?)
I've read a few reviews of people being able to play that on low. There's new drivers out for your chip with DX10 compatibility which will probably give you a big performance boost. Search the gaming\graphics card forum -
I don't mean to be rude either, but my unlce builds computers (for his private business, I worked for him for two summers. ) and YES it is possible. Okay so not with the card I suggested because *I* am not the one building machines. Could not contact him so I came here.
I cannot change the game settings because I cannot even get into the game to change everything to low. I will check up on the updated drivers tho, thx. -
Cool
Maybe they were mxm chips? Very few laptops can use mxm chips and there is definatly no option for that with your laptop because there is no interface for one.
This could help:
- Right click on the BF2 desktop shortcut and select open file location,
- Open the folder "profiles" then "local" then "default"
- You should see a video con file
- Open this with notepad
- edit it to look something like:
rem Optimal setting for CPU > 1600 MHZThis will set all the video settings to low.
game.setGameDisplayMode 800 600 32 0
game.setDetailTexture 1
game.setShadows 1
game.setEnvironmentMapping 1
game.setGraphicsQuality 1
game.setLightmaps 1
game.setRenderWhenSpawnMenu 1
game.setMenuViewdistance 40
game.setEffectsQuality 1
game.setPerformance 1 -
Okay, changed everything the way you said, but it would not let me save the file to video.con What do I do?
-
Drag and drop it onto the desktop, edit and save the file, then drop it back into the folder.
-
no dice... i completed everything you said and the program still will not load.
although we never tried the process i just did, a buddy of mine and i basically narrowed it down to the fact that i have an insufficient graphics card, which is why i was looking to upgrade, or try to. apparently the stock card that came with this laptop is not that good -

What do you think? -
Here's the link to the intel driver update page for your chip. The latest drivers should give you a boost over stock drivers.
Also, use the search bar at the top right of the page to look up your cards gaming performance. I've already found a few people playing BF2 with medium detail at over 20FPS! -
okay i have got that downloading as i type, thank you for your help and if i need more i know where to find you
-
okay, got an error message. Downloaded everything fine but when i install the driver updates it says "this not validated for your computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the manufacturer."
-
No problem. And welcome to NBR

Did some searching, and can't find much on the subject. Maybe start another thread in the gaming\graphics card forum and get some advice from people who have done it
Edit: Working?? -
okay, i will get over there and try that then, thanks for trying.
