Hi,
I would like to check how much hd space is left on the 32 gb ssd after vista, sony apps, and basic office applications?
thanks
-
I just got my TZ today. After deleting the recovery partition and installing a standard installation of Vista Ultimate, I had about 20gbs left.
-
I assume this is without the other sony applications and office/dvd apps?
How big is the recovery partition? -
A few apps that comes bundled with drivers, like the Sony camera capture utility or the toshiba bluetooth manager. But other than that yes, completely clean Vista Ultimate install. No other apps, just drivers.
The recovery partition is about 7gb. You can make DVDs of the recovery tool and delete it. -
I have Vista, all basic Sony Apps, MS Office and my other neccesary software and have just over 20GB left.
-
Is the SSD noticeably faster?
-

However, Im very happy to report that there is such a noticeable boost especially during windows boot-up time that I am willing to sacrifice space over speed. No longer do I cringe whenever I needed to reboot.
Few reasons why I chose the SSD configuration due to its many advantages over the conventional hard drive.
* Faster boot time
* Faster on random I/O
* Lower read and write latency (seek) time, hundreds of times faster than a mechanical disk
* Much more resistant to G-shock
* No defragmentation
* No heat output
It seems that the main complaint owners of the TX series have was the slow 4200rpm hard drive being the bottleneck. Especially with Vista installed, boot-up time is excruciatingly slow as well as launching applications. Boot-up time from pushing the power button to being able to start applications is 40 seconds flat, quicker than my desktop using a Raptor 10k rpm drive. Now that is fast! -
That's pretty impressive. Now I just have to wait for a 100GB or so 3.5" drive for my desktop >_>
-
I kept the Vista Business Edition original install, deleted some crapware. Generally I have 9-11gb of free memory on the 32 gb harddisk. I have left Hibernate on (which takes about 2gb). I find it necessary to regulary do Disk Cleanup including systems dumps etc to keep free memory up since the System starts to eat up memory over time.
The system shipped with 2 partitions. I am curious about the 5.5gb partition. It always says 100% Free on that partition. Is that the Recovery Partition? If so why is it all free? My other question is if I have made a Recovery DVD, can I then eliminate this 5.5gb partition? -
check this out http://laptopmag.com/Review/Sony-VAIO-VGN-TZ150N.htm
thats a review that says that after cleaning the tz150 boot up time was less than a minute, and thats with 1gb ram, with the tz170 which has 2gb ram i bet startup time could be almost as fast as the ssd drive.
i think its not worth the extra 3oo bucks or so for the ssd drive, im sticking with the hdd. plus 70 more gb -
It all depends on wants and needs, calot. If you are satisfied with those times, then go for it -- you will be saving yourself a lot.
I don't need a new laptop, and I don't need an SSD. I want both, so I ordered both. Now I'm going to check out a bag, and if I like it, I'll end up wasting another $US400 on something I don't need again. In a business where I need to be able to sell myself in order to sell an idea, I will consider it an investment in image. -
for you it obviously is an investment. yeah and i think i need the 100gb. cool. 400 on a bag? you gonna buy ferragamo or something like that? cool i want one to heheh
-
I saw a crazy nice burberry one at their outlet in buffalo. It was 600 bucks and I wondered that if I bought one, which one would I protect more? The bag or the computer? -
Your harddrive is far more important to boot Vista or XP fast.
And a 4200rpm harddrive is not 'almost as fast' as a SSD.
My tip: If you really want to get a 4200 rpm drive install XP. Preferably clean.
Better get a 5400rpm 160GB harddrive model from Japan.
I am glad I got SSD. Not only is it fast, you can't hear it and you can't feel it. The 160GB makes a very gentle sound and vibration. so I prefer switching it off. i might even take it out. -
you should get the burberry!! cool. or look for a ferragamo some place, they got super cool ones.
-
I had a look at the two brands you guys just mentioned, but nothing caught my attention. Ferragamo don't seem to tailor for the more "casual" business look. Burberry only really have girl bags, or am I looking in the wrong place?
To give you an idea of the two that I am eyeing off:
Tumi Slim Messenger -- $US365
The second is the Hugo Boss "BOSS Black" Shoulder bag, style 67712. You have to go to their website and navigate yourself to the men's section under "BOSS Black" to find it.
I don't mind the Porter New Gripper -- ~$US230, but I think it is a tad too big. -
@ Nanaki, if you like Boss you may also like Claudio Ferrici.
Here's some info:

Although I'm not sure if they have the model you are looking for. -
They focus on the "oily" leather look -- which I do not like. The SUFF postman bag (under mens / casual) looks like it may be my style, but I would need to see the inside and what it looks like when it's black.
Thanks for the input, though.
