Is the HDMI out just the video or does it do audio as well?

HDMI on the Z does both video and audio. Moreover, in spite of the specs published by SONY (1920x1080), the output resolution supports up to 1920x1200.

That depends on your source file... but yes it should. I think.

Yes it does; there is an option for it in the NVIDIA config settings.

You can connect it to a HD TV? I assume you can. What about connecting via the HDMI with an adapter so you can connect to a LCD monitor? Has anyone tried that? I am just wondering if there are any video/graphics issues if you do.

I wish the Vaio had DVI instead of the VGA out but...

I was also wondering if you had the HDMI adapter to DVI and connected to a LCD monitor while using a Linux OS. Would it work properly?

Yes, yes, yes and no (no issues).

In fact the Vaio Z looked better than anything else I've seen on my 22" LCD. Probably because of the color management on the Nvidia card.

Haven't tried it but shouldn't be any problem.

Partially. It will pass it from a DVD/BD, but not convert to it. If the source is 4 channel, for example, like many EAX games, it won't convert it to 5.1 for you, and you'll have to play in stereo.

Sorry for following up on myself, but if you use the Sony bundled version of WinDVD to play movies, DTS through HDMI is deliberately turned off. Use Windows Media Player or a full uncrippled version of WinDVD, and DTS should work fine too.
It's rather irritating that when you pay $2-3000 for a laptop, you get a deliberately crippled DVD player because the bean counters at Sony save a few pennies that way.

Yeah, that's annoying. Thanks for the info. That's good to know.
