I have a VAIO FW11 series laptop. I connected the HDMI cable from laptop to TV. The picture is perfect but I only hear the sound from the speakers of the laptop. What should I do?

I think you need an extra cable for sound since HDMI don't have sound in them AFAIK.

it *could* carry sound. HDMI certainly has the potential, Nvidia mostly hasn't implemented that.

Quick question: Are you using a realtek driver? If so, you have to enable sound within them. HDMI w/sound should be supported by your laptop, just make sure it is also supported by the monitor you are plugging into.

the fw does not have an nvidia card, only ati.

make sure you have the sound drivers installed for sound in hdmi, in system go to sound, video and game controllers, check to see that you have ati hdmi audio installed.

    hmm...
but don't you need a 5.1 sound card or something to utilise 5.1 surround sound?

I would've thought there would be more than 1 3.5mm cable to plug in given that each 3.5mm cable can only out put stereo sound, i.e. 2 channels.

or have i got it totally wrong

thats the problem, the z series doesnt have a digital out, i am stuck with the stereo headphone jack and the microphone in...

sounds like maybe i need an external sound card if i want to hook it up to a 5.1 system.

hdmi carries both audio and video, and i think z models come with hdmi output right? if so you dont need external sound card, check the sound setting on the control panel, make sure the 'digital output device (hdmi)' is set to default

I have a z and I have both audio and video coming out the HDMI. Occasionally I'll continue to get sound out of the laptop speakers rather than the HDMI if there's already something playing sound (even if paused). Closing the software and unplugging/replugging in the HDMI cable cures that. Maybe that's your problem?

Make sure you set the digital audio source for your AV receiver to be your HDMI input. HDMI does carry audio otherwise it might as well be DVI.

Sorry, I hear the sound from the laptop speakers, not from TV.
At sound devices there is the sound card and an HMDI that is not connecetd. Any idea how to make it work?

Well I think it should be able to carry 5.1 since last time I checked our blu ray was only connected to the TV and the sound system was connected only to the tv as well via optical and hdmi, so somehow the 5,1 surround from the blu ray disc is playing through the AV system speakers.

I connected my FW to the TV to test out skype on it, but a problem occured with the resolution.

Unfortunately the 1920x1080 resolution does not show up fully on the bravia which has the same resolution, part of the desktop is cut off. but the next resolution works just fine, 1776x1000 and the desktop fits onto the tv.

I played an xvid file on the FW and it played just fine with sound with no problems what so ever.

then choose digital output device (HDMI)
    set it as default device

There are few AV receivers out there that will pass both audio and video through HDMI; the majority only send video through HDMI.

This is something i learned about when researching HTIB setups for my PS3 because i wanted as little wiring as possible. There's a stickied thread on avsforum.com that shows what HTIB setups and there are some AV receivers in the thread too that pass audio/video through HDMI

I spent an hour trying to connect my FW290 to my new Bravia XBR6 TV. I had the same problem when the 1980x1080 desktop was projected on the TV in that some of the edges were cut off. You have to use the ATI display control panel advanced settings and adjust the overscanning and reduce the picture size slightly to fit. No need to change the display resolution. After that, everything worked perfectly with an amazing picture and sound.

On my Samsung TV, I have to set the setting to use "Just Scan" when I use my laptop so that I can get full 1920x1080. Any other settings like 16:9 will overscan and cut-off. I'm sure there is a similar setting on Sony HDTV.

I use Just Scan for all my HD sources. I rather see small bit of closed caption static on non-HD channels than soft overscanned image.

I have a VAIO laptop connected to a HDTV with a HDMI cable. I am getting sound through the TV (but not the suround system). For example if i play an mp3 or some of the sound during the intro of a new bluray dvd, the sound comes through the TV speakers. But when the main Bluray film plays i cannot hear anything. Any clues?

I'm having the same problem, found out that on some Blu Ray DVDs that they have Dolby DTS sound during the movie but not previews or disc menu hence why you get sound during those times and not the actual movie. Unfortunately i don't know how to fix it, i guess you can change the sound output format on the DVD's menu but the movie i tried it on only had that Dolby DTS (no regular Dolby option) for english...

It must be a receiver issue, i've tried everything with no luck...
