HELP! keyboard ribbon cable Z11 broken

guys, i need your help badly. i broke the pins in my keyboard ribbon cable and i need a replacement ASAP.

i cannot find the part number for this. the model # in the ribbon cable state FPC-199





im in canada i don't know where to buy this part.. please help me...

hi rachel, thanks for the reply. sparepartswarehouse charge too much for int'l shipping! total would be $75 for the shipping and taxes for a $38 item.. whew!

 

If you have a friend in the US may be purchase through Sony spare parts and pay with your bank card and then ship it onto a friend to ship onto you. This has been done before.

michibahn, I created the exact problem when opening up my laptop and have ordered a replacement part. Can you tell if the replacement part came with everything to merely remove the old flex cable (and pins) and simply plug in the new one?

I ordered direct from Sony back on 11/19/10. My order never shipped and after I called to see what was up, they told me the part is on back order. And I'm getting this same answer week after week. Finally, a lady at Spare Parts Warehouse informed me Sony screwed up their inventory system so they may actually have the part but the computer some Sony-rep is looking at will say "back order". Ultimately, there is nothing I can do to speed things up but I sure would like my laptop to be mobile again.

I'm curious if you know of a company that will have the part in stock? At this point I don't care how much it costs...

 

Why don't you just send it to Sony for repair and pay for the part and labor. It might not be that expensive.
I broke my touchpad connector and they fixed it for free so you never know.

Have you looked into replacing the entire keyboard. I did that for a client recently and the entire brand new keyboard was only $29 including postage.

did the keyboard come with the ribbon cable when you received it? the ribbon cable itself is $38... I don't see how a complete replace of keyboard with ribbon cable can be less costly?

 

Yes, it came with the cable. This was NOT for the same model of computer it was for another Vaio (not a Z11) model. (Sorry I should have been more clear on that point in my post.) But even on that model (an SZ). The entire keyboard assembly was just a couple of dollars more than the cable alone. With most of these sorts of replacement part items, you are REALLY paying for the storage and handling of the parts inventory not really the part itself.

The complete assembly, in this case, was also more readily available than just a ribbon cable. Which is why I suggested this to the OP who was having delivery issues with a ribbon.

i see.. did you buy your Z1 here in Canada also? it is a good thing that they replaced yours even if you have opened it up. I bought mine in HK and I have no idea if I can make a warranty claim here in Canada.

Yikes! $177? That is one expensive keyboard. Is that a backlit model or something? Is that Sony's price or a third party price?

Call them you will never know until you try.
I took an unrelated repair to the Sony store in Michigan and USA sony repaired my Canadian Vaio.

 

Hey this is guy that has same issue with z11. Did you ever get a replacement part? I've tried everything and still no luck...

BTW, sony will not fix for me because this is refurbished computer under no warrantee.

I did order from Sony on 11/19. Still on back order they say. I also put in order with spare parts warehouse. Hopefully a big purchaser like them can get priority handling as they have to order part from Sony anyway. I'll update this on 01/22 when their 10 day shipping ETA expires

Nope. Still waiting! I cancelled my order with Sony Direct and ordered from Sparepartswarehouse.com on 01/11. Supposedly my part should be here by next week, but I'm skeptical to say the least.

 

Just send it to sony for repair and pay for it out of warranty.

 

oh man.. i hope you'll get it.. mine has the new eta feb 17.. but i think these 3rd party suppliers also rely on Sony's parts availability right?

rachel.. i saw that already and still haven't received a reply from the seller asking for additional pics. i don't see the pins on the cable which will be connected to the motherboard so I'm a bit hesitant in purchasing the item.

by the way, have you heard of Computer Parts International - Welcome ? they have it on stock and charging $55 including shipping. the problem is i cannot find any link to online purchase some guy just contacted me through email.

yeah it is also instock in sony usa that's why i'm wondering why sparepartswarehouse told me that this part has been discontinued by sony..

lol.. yeah i've checked many times in sony usa and it is really available. unfortunately, they won't accept shipping to canada and can't even buy from here. so that's why i'm going through these 3rd party suppliers.. haayy..

 

That's a shame. I order stuff through the Sony spare parts store and get stuff sent to a friend in the US and get them to ship it onto me. I pay with my international visa card with no problems. If you have no other options may be you can look into getting this shipped to a PO box or something like that in the US and then they will forward it onto you.

by the way rachel just wanted to ask if you are paying with your international visa, do you have a US address to be provided in the Billling Info when you place your order? co'z the credit card info should be the same as the billing info right? can't even change the Country under the Billing Info in the order page. thanks!

 

My shipping address matches the billing address. I don't fill in the billing address part because there are no changes to be made.

 

ok so your shipping and billing address is the address of your friend in the US right? how about your international visa account address? is it ok if the visa card is from another country which in my case from canada?

 

Yes, the shipping address+billing address is my friends address in the US.
My bank card is registered to my home address in the UK, it's a UK Visa debit card.

no rachel.. i was giving myself a deadline for my order at global electronics here in canada this week before purchasing it again at sony USA.. lo and behold i called global electronics yesterday for my last follow up and the lady told be that the part has arrived!
