I bought a new vaio 3 days ago (VGN-FZ190N4). Today when I turn it on, it alerts this:
"windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be cause.
    If windows files...".

and says that I've to launch startup repair, so I choosed it. In the recovery page :
1- at the first I choose "Windows System Restore" -> Start but it alerts:

No restore points have been creeted om your computer's system disk. To create a restore point open System Protection.

So I clicked "System Protection" -> It alert this:

Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state. If you use System Restore in this limited state, you cannot undo the
restore operation. Help topic are not available in this state.

2- after that I tried to restore c: drive to factory conditions. After start, it alerts another problem, again:

Could not obtain the target drive letter.

I clicked ok and it show an error:

    Task failed with error: -1

After this I tried to repair with the advanced boot options:

Safe Mode: it work til crcdisk.sys and then restart...
Safe Mode with networking: also like safe mode
Safe Mode with command prompt: also like safe mode

Enable Boot loggong: will restart system
    and ...

just when I choose "Disable automatic restart on system failure" it has stop and in a blue page it shows this:

    ################################

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any update drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190445,0x87c46410,0xc0000102,0x00000000)

    ################################

At the end I tried a windows xp cd to check the hardware. When I choose to set up windows xp, It alerts :

Setup didn't find any hard disk drive drives installed in your computer.!!!

I'm confused of this problem. Please help me to solve it.

What happened in those three days? Did you install any software/hardware? At this point you might as well try doing the restore from the Recovery partition. Turn the machine off. Turn it back on and as it boots up, hit the F10 key. This will cause it to boot from the recovery partition. It will then allow you to restore the drive back to it's original "out of box" state.

    Gary

P.S. This will, of course, wipe out EVERYTHING you had on the C: drive.

    Hello.

    thanks for your answer.

I just install some softwares like Dreamweaver, photoshop, babylon,.. and I haven't any special work!

When I press F10 for booting, I get this alert:

Edit windows boot options for: VAIO Recovery Environment

    Path: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe

    [ /DETECTHAL /MININT /REDIRECT RDIMAGEOFFSET=8192 RDIMAGELENGHT=3161088 R DPATH=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\sources\boot.wim ]

in this page I can edit the path and press enter for submit or press Esc for cancel.
when I press enter, it'll go to vaio recovery center, that I test it, ago.

    please help me...

It sounds like a harddrive failure. I`d recommended you to call them. Hopefully it will get fixed soon. However, if you did make recovery DVD, you may want to try reinstall it, just in case (it is natural for windowsXP disc bring unable to see HDD on newer laptops, AFIAK).

You can use Vaio recovery tool for creating recovery DVDs. You have to be in Windows for that I am afraid, though.

If you didn't already, call sony and tell them the problem. They should send you a recovery cd that restores everything to factory conditions. I had a similar problem and ended up wiping out my hard drive when trying to partition it. The recovery cd they send you will almost certainly fix it.
