    Hello,

I decided to splash out on a TZ190 from Conics after reading about it (and them) on this forum.

I'm pleased to say that after weeks of waiting, it arrived the other day and I can't wait to get it up and running. (and damn, it looks good!!)

The service from Conics was excellent (namely, Brett) and they've reconfigured the machine with english OS, minus the bloatware.

It seems to boot up VERY quickly, but I just wanted to throw out a few figures and see if you guys think it all sounds reasonable and to put my mind at ease.

I'm yet to install any additional software, so please keep this in mind.

I ordered the 64GB SSD model, which I'm being told has a 59.7GB capacity - of which I'm left with 44.1GB......15GB for OS and basic functionality and 4GB....gone?!? Does that sound right??

Also, with nothing open Task Manager shows 65 processes running and Physical Memory at 28% - does this seem ok?

As I'm not very experienced in this (could you tell?!) I don't really want to be doing a 'custom re-install' of my own, for very little performance gain - as I said, boot up time is lightning fast which can only be a good sign, right?

Many thanks in advance for your comments/ advice.

    Gavin

    1) when they say 64GB they really mean 64,000,000,000 bytes! And there's 1024bytes in a KB, 1024KB in a megabyte, etc.

    So 64,000,000,000 bytes = 62,500,000 KB

    62,500,000 KB = 61,035 MB

    61,035 MB = 59.6 GB!

    So yes that is fine!

If you right click on your hard drive and select properties it will show you the size of your drive in bytes.

    2) Yes that seems about right for Vista, it eats up a lot of system resources!

    3) Yes, booting up quick is always a good thing!

To answer your question about Ram and CPU usage, Vista is designed differently to XP. Basically everyone that see how intensely Vista utilizes the RAM they freak out. It is using alot of it, but look at it this way. Think of it as Vista using the physical Ram more efficiently. The RAM in your PC is the the quickest place to store and access data, so unlike XP, Vista uses as much of it as possible rather than caching it up on your hard drive and having less RAM usage. So it's not really a case of Vista being a memory hog, it is trying to make your system more efficient by utilizing the best part. I can't say its the best explanation, but there are heaps of forums that go into greater detail about this.

As a requirement I would say don't run Vista with less than 2GB RAM on a 32 bit platform, and from what I've seen the 32 bit version can only utilize 3GB of RAM. If you have more it will not be any benefit to you...
