    I have a VGN-FZ18E that's just over a month old.

Every now and again, I hear this high-pitched beep-cum-whine, which I think is coming from the hard disk, but it could be the processor. It last for about 2 or 3 seconds and sometimes freezes the screen, then stops again.

There's no pattern to it - it seems to just happen at random and I can't link it to any particular activity.

Should I get it checked out? Cheers.

I had a whine from a previous dell notebook. After much trial and error, concluded that it is issue with speaker/sound driver.

Tested by playing a song/whatever, minimise the sound the lowest (ie mute) the whining disappears. When I stop the playback, the whine comes back.

I did not bother to fix the problem... now I'm happily using my TZ :)

I'm not sure if your problem is the same as mine, just do the quick test, and see if you can narrow down the problem.

BTW, I don't think HDD makes high pitched or whining sound, usually it is a more mechanically sounding clicking sound.

    Hope this helps....

if HDD is suspected, you can run some diagnostics ... scan disk, etc ...

i'd recommend hdtune - it's free. you can check the SMART info on the HDD to determine if there are any major issues.
