I had an SZ120 and now an SZ160, and I find that every few minutes, in a quiet environment, my hard drive emits a very short click / whir. I had this on both machines...

I have nothing open when it does this (although, there's ALWAYS something running in the background, it is Wind0ze after all...)

Does anyone else have this ? Is that the hard drive protection kicking in ?

I had that problem with a ThinkPad X41, Hitachi drives seemed especially prone to this problem in my experience, I don't know what brands the SZ uses. It's not an indication of anything wrong per se, but it does definitely get annoying if you're in a quiet room where it's extremely noticeable. I guess wait to see if other SZ owners are having this issue and look at what brand hard drive you have to see if it's indicative of the series or just the HD Sony supplied you with (they usually use a couple of different brands)

it may be the HD going into low/power down mode to extend battery life.

Maybe it is the G-Sensors locking the drive.

Hmm I am pretty sure the FE and SZ both use Hitachi’s primarily. I have not heard any noise really from my machine personally. if that noise however is rather constant keep your eye on it. Before hard drives die they typically make those symptoms you describe. It could be however you just have really good hearing and it bothers you. I'm rather finicky myself, but if you let noises that are tolerable bother you then being happy is unattainable. My old I8000 dell (hate that thing) made that noise and it was a hitachi. I downloaded a firmware update and it relieved the issue, to bad it died a month later hah!

My SZ110 have this click as well. I am about to send it in for service this weekend anyway and I will ask them to check this as well.
