    Hi guys,
just got back from vacation with tons of pictures in my Z590. Anyhow, I was copying all the pictures to my ipad, the laptop randomly shut down and restarted on its own while I was getting my coffee. "Operating system not found" is on now and I can hear clicking noise from the harddrive. It's almost like the head is swinging back and for in there (doesn't seem like it's scratching the disk as I can hear the harddrive spinning up perfectly fine). What should I do now? I do want to get my data back. Is there a software boot to check the condition of the harddrive? Or a simple way try to reset the harddrive itself?

My next option is to find another harddrive to replace the current one while finding a company to recover my data on the old one. What type of harddrive does this laptop take? What is the best replacement right now? If i'm going SSD, what is the best option out there now? Storage space is important to me.

    Thanks

VGN-Z's used 2.5" drives. (so any regular laptop hard drive will do). Sata II means you won't be using any of the newest SSD's (well you could, but you'd be wasting money since the interface can't move data that fast). Also, HDD's are ~$.10/GB whereas the better SSD's are ~$1.50/GB on sale (<-- there was a 96GB Kingston SSD for $95 on amazon the other day, but that's a Kingston... cheap SSD...)

Thanks Achusaysblessyou for your response. So any 2.5" drive would work perfectly fine? Any brand or specific model you'd recommend? I went through a lot of posts here and it seems ppl like Hitachi Travlr a lot. Is there a huge power different between 5600 vs 7200 models? I have seen many saying that 7200 is more sufficient. SSD prob isn't a way to now now since the space is limited and the cost is way too high.
    Thanks

I've heard good things about the Scorpio Black.

For SSD I'd recommend OCZ and Intel.

In regards to getting your data back, I'd recommend getting a USB 2.0 (or USB 3.0) 2.5" hard drive enclosure. Pull the HDD out of your Z and stick it in this. Then plug that in to another computer to pull your files and other important things out of.

    Good luck!
