I am interested in buying a Sony Vaio but have heard compatible replacement parts are difficult to find. Also, I have heard that many repair shops don't service Sony. As I would be using the laptop for school, it is important to know whether I will have to ship out my laptop for repairs to the manufacturer, waiting 2 or 3 weeks, or if I will just be able to take it into the nearest repair shop and get the necessary replacement parts.

All of this is not considering voiding the warranty (as that is less important to me than quick repair time).

    Thanks for any insights :].

Yeah, I think I have first hand experience in that area. My HD has been damaged and my cousin and me have tried to replace it with mannnny hard drives. He has lots of laptops at work to test with and none of them work.

Hopefully the Fujistsu I ordered from newegg.com works.

That sucks :/. I really love the look of the CR-series, which is reasonably priced for what it is. I don't know if this will stop me from buying it or not.

In terms of parts, the only easily replaceble parts is the hard drive and memory. You can buy any 2.5inch notebook drive and notebook memory to replace the ones that came with your unit. I just took out the hard drive that sony gave me with my FZ190CTO and replaced it with a faster and bigger seagate drive.

It is much more difficult and expensive (often impossible) to replace other parts including cpu, motherboard, display, and gpu.

That's actually great, although it conflicts with what the poster above said. I was most concerned about hard drive and memory (had to replace the hard drives on my desktops a few times...).

Hm. We need a tie breaker.

Hard drives and memory are a piece of cake on models where they are accessible from removable panels on the bottom.

Unless you don't know how to use a screwdriver, the cpu, memory and hard drive are all easily replaceable.

Hell no, they are not difficult to find at all. Besides Sonys headoffice in ur area Sony always has numerous overflow authorized repair facilities that are quite capable of repairing ur laptop.

Sony is huge and is probably the biggest diversified electronics manufacturer in the world (yet LG is catching up)
A lot of Sonys authorized repair shops may be specific to what they can repair. Some may not have the microfiche to say the Vaios my may for other Sony products.
In my area theres over 8 authorized Sony facilities who are licensed to repair Wega's and radios etc. And only 2 who can repair Vaios. None are authorized to repair the DSLR as a dust free room is required for that.

So i really wouldnt worry if anything should happen to your Vaio. Sonys service is superb.

Unless your model's warranty included onsite you will have to ship it in if there is not an authorized VAIO servicer near you.

Yeah, I'm not so concerned with voiding the warranty. I'll probably just get the basic 1 yr deal. Hopefully I won't be replacing parts that soon.
