Has anyone actually used a Z-series yet?

What are your opinions? I'm mostly concerned about the 1600x900 screen, whether that's too small. Also what about the battery life and case heat? I have a Macbook Pro right now, and I hate the **** heat conducted from the aluminum case.

Only 1 person on this forum has recieved their Z-series notebook, IsmanuX I believe was his name.

I'm still waiting to recieve mine as are many other people, so you'll get an answer when people actually start getting theirs. The Z-series notebook was officially launched on August 15th. So, I think this coming monday MIGHT be the earliest some US based forum members might start recieving it.

That's one of the huge drawbacks of being the thinnest 15" and 17" around. The problem is even bigger in the Macbook Air.

Some people were disappointed with the height of the Z. I'm not because I expect the cooling to be very good.

The fact that Sony Japan offer the Z with 2.8Ghz 35 watt CPU is a very good sign.

Metal conducts heat. I don't know what's the hype of aluminum.

Learn some thermochemistry before bragging about fancy metal chassis (intended for laptop makers)...

The Macbook Pro is like wearing a giant heat sink on my lap. It gets ridiculously hot sometimes and I wear jeans. It's impossible to put on bare skin even for web browsing. And there are so many quirks to the keyboard and OSX. I end up booting mostly from Vista anyway. I'm sick of Macs' form over function philosophy. And **** the one button mouse (yes I know you can do two fingers and click, but still a pain in the rear for something so basic and functional).

From my use of the Z so far I haven't noticed any undue hot spots. I'll pull it out later today and see if I can find any spots that tend to get hot during use.

I'm also another Apple MBP owner looking very closely at the Vaio Z. I was hoping for another Vaio TZ to be released but I haven't heard anything so I'm getting the impression the Vaio Z is the catch-all SZ-TZ replacement. I will be staying on OSX so just gonna hackintosh the hell out of it. The heat on my MBP is approaching dangerous levels if I ever plan on having kids. The only ray of light for possible future procreation is the battery life is only about 2hrs 30mins so the incendiary attack on my nuts doesn't last that long. I guess Apple would call it a feature at the next keynote speech (cue smug Steve Jobs look and cries of adoration from audience of Waffen SS-like brainwashed laptop fanatics).

I was really hoping the Vaio Z would allow a twin HDD+SSD option as I want about 750gb of mobile space for media and self backup and fallover protection. I guess I'll have to figure a way to mod it and remove the dvd drive.

Hey Nixon any chance you could do a rudimentary battery life test. Its a major concern for me as it wil have to last a minimum 4-8 hours for my New York Bar Exams to make it a credible option for me.

People ... read the threads ... the ULV chips are not out or officially announced yet, so any updates to the T series (and hopefully the G and U series as well) won't be announced for another month or two. The Z is not a replacement for the T series. The SR is more of the SZ replacement in terms of size, but the Z is its replacement in features (i.e. dual GPUs).

Thanks FenderP you just made my day. I admit I haven't read the Sony threads in a while, will do better next time, sorry. I would still love to see what kinda battery life the Z can get and put it up against the TZ revision when it comes out. Danke again.

The Z is going to vary in terms of battery life (most processors are 25W but the 2.80GHz in Japan is 35W; having the RAIDed SSDs will probably drain more, too), and the TZ will get better since it's lower voltage. Then it will vary in terms of which battery you have (standard vs. extended) and your settings ... so I'd say that if battery life is your concern, the TZ will win hands down.

I just ordered the Z (blame the itchy fingers)

But I found all my needs answered in its small form and lightweightness :D

I am dying to read/see pics of actual usage - Laptopmag did 'hands on' first view but it was brief :(

I am checking sonystyle.com every hour to see if anything changed from "Processing" :(
