The 2.5" 500GB hard drives have been out for a few months now. I know that Hitachi and Samsung both make one, though Hitachis is a bit thicker, and the Samsung has horrendous access times. Which brand did you get eucalifornia?

Edit : I think they came out in late April or early May, and it should be noted that the Maxtor is infact a desktop hard drive.

You do realize the Hitachi is 2mm thicker than normal laptop hard drives right? Will it fit in your laptop?

I don't think the Hitachi will fit but who knows, maybe there's 2 mm space in the Z.

There's a user on Z-mega-thread who just changed their HDD on the Z to a 7200 RPM 320gb - so its definately possible with just the right size but the ultimate question is, will Sony honor the warranty if you upgrade the HDD (logic says yes, why not but with Sony you never know)

If Sony finds out you opened the Z you are not covered by warranty, as far as I know. Opening up the Z is not something that Sony wants to be done by consumers. I can understand that.

So if you're gonna do it, do not leave traces/marks, and be sure to keep the old drive around in case you need to put it back.

There is almost no room in the Z for a hard drive any bigger than the one that came with it. I would say there isn't 2mm extra in there for the Hitachi. I think the reason Sony's SSDs are arranged as they are is because there is no room for the metal casing
