Just throwing it out there. I know that Sony specifies a limit of 4, but other laptops with the same chipset have been able to do at least 6GB (and I've heard 8) - but does anyone have any experience with trying this?
-
-
I'm surprised that someone hasn't actually tried this.
-
No offense.
Seems like no one uses the search function anymore.
Hope the following link helps:

That is for the Z, this is for the SZ6-7. There not the same laptops or using all the same hardware.
-
For some reason, I kept seeing Z instead of SZ.
Once again, I sincerely apologize for my mistake.
Sorry.
Maybe I should make an appointment with my optician tomorrow. -
so has anyone tried it yet?
-
Guess not. Want to be the pioneer for us all?
cheers ... -
From some quick research, the chipset it uses is Intel GM965.
According to Intel..... this chipset supports only 4GB:
Read here for the chipset limitations:
http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=28117
So 99% chance it will not detect more than 4GB. -
As LondonTrojan stated though there are people who have got their PM965 notebooks to address up to 6GB of memory or more.

Sometimes you can address more ram than what is taken as a set limit. It doesn't mean that it will definitely work in a Sony SZ though.
I only use a 32bit OS so it is kind of pointless me buying more ram when i'm not even fully using the 4GB that i have installed.

moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I have read that the GM965/PM965 can actually take 8gb.
Though intel doesn't say so.
just search this forum and you should see some examples of the santa rosa chipset using 8gb. -
thanks for the info guys i hope i can find someone who is using more than 4gb rams on the SZ6
-
hi everyone. ive tested 4gb x 2 pc2-5300 667ghz g.skill memory from newegg and my sz650n laptop reads all of it!! both in the bios and in system information in vista x64.
-
-
nice!!! thats 8GB then
-
Has anyone confirmed that this will work on an SZ7?
-
8gb works fine with SZ7. Mine is SZ780E
-
I'm running an SZ71 that's 2 years old, updated with the BIOS updated from 2008 from vaio-link.
I've managed today to install 6gb using a 4gb and 2gb chip and have ordered a replacement for the 2gb to take me up to 8gb. I'm also running 32bit Windows 7 and addressing the whole 6gb via a kernel hack
Everything works great.
I really noticed the difference going from 3gb to 4gb when I first ran the hack. The main improvement on Vista/Windows 7 is down to it caching your apps etc using Superfetch. This meant that launching apps was quicker AND compiling in Visual Studio was much faster. -
Awesome. Thanks for confirming. Now I just have to wait for the price of 4GB sticks of RAM to fall

I'm looking for these 8Gb of RAM for my SZ. Do you know where i can buy these ?
thanks again -

Hi everyone,
A quick question for anyone else with 4GB of RAM (or higher) installed in their SZs that is also running a 64-bit OS (2003/XP, Vista, or 7):
Can you put the notebook into hibernate; does the Hibernation Tab appear under Power Options?
I just wanted to confirm that this limitation is, in fact true:
You cannot put a computer that has more than 4 GB of memory into hibernation in Windows XP, in Windows Server 2003, in Windows Vista, or in Windows Server 2008
Thanks! -
I am running W7 Pro 64bit and i just checked this and yes i was able to put my computer into hibernate. The option is also there in my power options under the sleep tab.
-
I was also able to.
-
I put 8GB RAM in my Vaio SZ650 today, which works fine.
The only requirement was to install BIOS R0122S5 as I was running an older version that couldn't see all the RAM and wouldn't boot at all with more than 4GB installed. -
-
Thanks -
Borrowing this thread just to ask a quick question.
According to Sony limit is 2gb for the sz1 with gm945. Anyone know how much you can increase it with?
Googling I found 4gb should be possible but due to Memory-mapping (mmio ??) only 3gb is possible. Figured someone here has tried and could answer?! -
3.12gb, for the older models there is a BIOS limitation.
-
Guys, which RAM exactly did you use to get the 2 x 4GB working? Should any PC6400 SODIMM work?
-
If you have the 965 chipset (SZ6-SZ & and some SZ5's), pretty much any 2gig modules should work. It's when you go over 4 you need to worry.
Also, you will need a bios update to get more than 3gigs. -
Sorry, I have SZ6XN model, so 965 chipset and I already have 4Gs. I read here that somebody put 8G in and it worked, thats what I wanna know which chips.
-
I have heard of 8 gigs working. Intel says it will, Sony just hasn't tested it so they won't sy it will.
I've put more than Sony recommended in a few systems and it worked, however... the original bios on SZ's would only handle 3. Sometimes systems can be bios limited, not just chipset, but I beleive in this case it's not an issue. I've heard of enough doing it successfully to say that it should work.
Has anyone tried 6GB RAM in their SZ6-7?
