Just throwing it out there. I know that Sony specifies a limit of 4, but other laptops with the same chipset have been able to do at least 6GB (and I've heard 8) - but does anyone have any experience with trying this?

That is for the Z, this is for the SZ6-7. There not the same laptops or using all the same hardware.

Oops. I apologize for my bad. For some reason, I kept seeing Z instead of SZ. Once again, I sincerely apologize for my mistake. Sorry.

Maybe I should make an appointment with my optician tomorrow. :(

From some quick research, the chipset it uses is Intel GM965.

According to Intel..... this chipset supports only 4GB:
Read here for the chipset limitations:
    http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=28117

So 99% chance it will not detect more than 4GB.

As LondonTrojan stated though there are people who have got their PM965 notebooks to address up to 6GB of memory or more.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5058633

Sometimes you can address more ram than what is taken as a set limit. It doesn't mean that it will definitely work in a Sony SZ though.

I only use a 32bit OS so it is kind of pointless me buying more ram when i'm not even fully using the 4GB that i have installed.

I have read that the GM965/PM965 can actually take 8gb.
    Though intel doesn't say so.

just search this forum and you should see some examples of the santa rosa chipset using 8gb.

I'm running an SZ71 that's 2 years old, updated with the BIOS updated from 2008 from vaio-link.

I've managed today to install 6gb using a 4gb and 2gb chip and have ordered a replacement for the 2gb to take me up to 8gb. I'm also running 32bit Windows 7 and addressing the whole 6gb via a kernel hack

    Everything works great.

I really noticed the difference going from 3gb to 4gb when I first ran the hack. The main improvement on Vista/Windows 7 is down to it caching your apps etc using Superfetch. This meant that launching apps was quicker AND compiling in Visual Studio was much faster.

Awesome. Thanks for confirming. Now I just have to wait for the price of 4GB sticks of RAM to fall :(

The price of 4GB DDR2 will continuously increase, while the price of DDR3 will decrease for a while. I have recommended all friends around me to buy DDR2 immediately if necessary, to avoid the astronomical price of being out-of-stock everywhere in the future.

After having been running 32-bit Windows for a while I have finally decided to discard the PAE solution, because for most programs each single process can only use up to 2GB. 64-bit OS is the best solution to me.

I put 8GB RAM in my Vaio SZ650 today, which works fine.

The only requirement was to install BIOS R0122S5 as I was running an older version that couldn't see all the RAM and wouldn't boot at all with more than 4GB installed.

Once the price comes down I plan to do the same, if I still have my SZ by then.

Which brand did you buy? I want to put 8G in my Sz650 also. It will be appreciated if you tell me exactly where and which brand did you get so that I won't get someting incompatible.

    Thanks

Borrowing this thread just to ask a quick question.

According to Sony limit is 2gb for the sz1 with gm945. Anyone know how much you can increase it with?

Googling I found 4gb should be possible but due to Memory-mapping (mmio ??) only 3gb is possible. Figured someone here has tried and could answer?! :)

Guys, which RAM exactly did you use to get the 2 x 4GB working? Should any PC6400 SODIMM work?

If you have the 965 chipset (SZ6-SZ & and some SZ5's), pretty much any 2gig modules should work. It's when you go over 4 you need to worry.

Also, you will need a bios update to get more than 3gigs.

I have heard of 8 gigs working. Intel says it will, Sony just hasn't tested it so they won't sy it will.

I've put more than Sony recommended in a few systems and it worked, however... the original bios on SZ's would only handle 3. Sometimes systems can be bios limited, not just chipset, but I beleive in this case it's not an issue. I've heard of enough doing it successfully to say that it should work.
