I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW140E with an Intel pro wireless 5100 and an P8400 centrino2 processor running 2.26GHZ.

I use a netgear WNR8342 pre-N wireless router that my desktop connects to at 270Mbps. 270Mbps is the maximum supported speed and I use a netgear WN111 on the desktop to achieve that speed. I use WPA2 security and there are no obstructions from my laptop to the router, which operates only at 2.4Ghz. I sincerely doubt there is anything causing any interference.

The Vaio laptop never exceeds 135Mbps. It connects briefly at 270Mbps and then drops to 135Mbps. I would love to permanently bump the speed to 270Mbps, but this seems to be a problem for me as well.

Anyone out there have better speed with the same or similar setup?

I have an Intel Pro Wireless 5100 in the Vaio. Are you saying that the 5100 is limited to 144Mbps? Is that a hardware limitation exclusive to the 5100 at 2.4 GHz?

It must be, because my Netgear router works exclusively in the 2.4 GHz band. My desktop achieves speeds of 270Mbps, which is the maximum limit of the router.

There is nothing I have found in the documentation for the 5100, or any other 2.4 GHz N wireless device, that points to a limit of 144Mbps. Considering that my Netgear operates *exclusively* at 2.4 and achieves speeds of 270 Mbps, I am wondering if this is merely a case of immature drivers or if there is a magic bullet out there that can bring the speed of the 5100 to 270 Mbps.
