My fan has died and I have no idea how I should go about replacing it, the machine is out of warranty now.
Has anyone replaced the main fan on the SZ before and if possible assist me with a step by step on how to do it.
    Thanks in advance

I tried to remove my fan to clean it and I came to the conclusion that it can't be done, not at least without a lot of work. It seems to me when it was assembled it must have been one of the first things put in there so if you really intend on removing it plan on taking the whole thing apart. For me I really didn't want to do that in case I wasn't able to put it all back together right. Anyway I think sony might be able to still fix it for a fee of course since it's not under warranty anymore.

Yes I tried to remove mine too and bloody hell it's not an easy thing to get to.
In the end I simply gave up.
Now my next question is does anyone in the UK know of a good sony vaio repairer?

I changed the fan in my SZ. It is not easy as the fan-assembly is fixed on both sides on the mainboard so you have to remove the mainboard.
The service-manual http://home.comcast.net/~nw_systems/vgnSZ.pdf shows the steps needed (you have to do almost everything until about page 31).
You have to reapply 2 or 3 heatsinks, so you will need some pads or heat conductive paste.
It took me about half a day, but I was very careful and changed the harddisk at the same time.

Sorry, I live in Switzerland. I wouldn't fell safe enough to do it on a notebook that belongs to someone else.

BTW: I found the replacement fan on ebay for about 20$.
