Guys, I would really appreciate some help with this.

Some minutes ago I had some error (I don't remember exactly how I caused it) while changing the background image of the desktop. Suddenly the desktop turned all white in the background and there was some message telling me that my active desktop have been deactivated. There was a button "Restore Active Desktop" or something like that. I clicked on it and then things kind of return to normal except for two things, the desktop background was all black, which I assumed was normal since it was the color selected as background color on Properties of the desktop, but once I selected once again the pic I wanted to have as a background image on the desktop, I noticed that now the labels of all the icons in my desktop have now a black background underneath them. Just like a rectangle, big enough to serve as a background to the white letters of the icons, and because I'm a noob, I don't know how to take them out :(

Maybe is something very simple, but God knows I tried looking in My Computer>Properties>Advanced, in Desktop>Properties, and somewhere else, and I couldn't find where I can disable that to just have the letters without the black background underneath them.

    Please help this noooooob!

The Aero interface may be deactivated. Did you check that? If not, it may have to do with Alpha blending (transparency).

maybe somehow you have the shadow for icons on. Okay here is what you do

    1. click on start, right click on my computer and go to properties
    2. go to the advance tab and click on settings for visual
    3. select use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop
    4. then click on apply or ok

Yeah Garmin, that was the first thing I tried, but the things just keep appearing! Even after rebooting many times. It's making me craaaaaazy! Is annoying as hell. I don't know what more to do. And I just remembered that all this happened just after I deleted all the default wallpapers that came with the Windows XP in My Computer>Local Disc(C)>WINDOWS>Web>Wallpaper. But why should it cause all this? I don't get it.

hmm interesting, maybe you shouldtry restoring the file back to the Z by restoring it form your recycle bin or by copy and pasting the file form another xp comp.

Ok. I restored all the default wallpapers I deleted, then rebooted and the things are still there. I feel confused and defeated. How come there won't be a way to take those things out? It's just a cosmetic thing that should be one of the simplest things to do and it just boggles my mind that I tried everything I know to make them disappear and return to the previous appearance and failed miserably. Am I that much of a noob?
