Seems I've had nothing but trouble with my DVD-RW drive since I did a re-install with my own copy of XP and the Sony drivers..... everything else is fine, so I assume I did a good job. The first problem I had was that the drive wasn't even recognized, didn't even show up. I found a fix for that on here, making an adjustment in the registry. Now the drive shows up, but when I put in a blank DVD to backup some files, it comes up as a "CD Drive" with no space available, it's not possible to put any files in there. When a blank cd is inserted, that is recognized, it's possible to put files in there for burning. Oddly, when there is no media in the drive, it is identified as a "DVD-RW drive", just not when I actually put a dvd in there. I've tried a couple of different brands of dvd, I don't think that's it. Also, I installed the Roxio DigitalMedia SE software that comes with the Sony, and it finds "no suitable drive" to burn to, whether I have a cd or dvd in the drive. If I put in a dvd movie, it does let me watch it.

I've scoured the forum here, and can't find a solution to this, does anyone have any ideas? I'm starting to get pretty frustrated, and really don't know what to do. I got this computer on ebay (new, and haven't had any other troubles), so I don't know if Sony support will help me....

Thanks for any advice anyone can give me....

    Sounds like a hardware problem.
Ask Sony if it is still under warranty or just send it back to seller.

If that is not an option try using Nero to burn.
Roxio is auto detect blank disk type (CD or DVD). In Nero you can select disk type (CD or DVD) in the software so it may help.
